wheel building / discussion thread

i need a new rim to replace the stans grail i cracked a few weeks ago. i would like your recommendations on spokes and rim!
front wheel
hub is a 28h white industries
must be tubeless, 23mm inner width or so
40c tire is going on this
primary use is CX racing

i am below the ENVE price range but above my usual “cheap as possible” price range. thinking something like a belgium+ or light bicycle rim. what is best value in race-worthy tubeless rim?
what spokes?

AFAIK Mavic isn’t shipping them, yet.

edit - holy shit, in stock online! Fucking finally.

I have the weirdest desire for a race bike with those

I know a couple builders that have. I’d would pass.

Big tension drop with tire installed (no surprise to me), relatively low max tension. That’s a recipe for shitty wheels.

Fucking shit Mavic rims and their low tension limits…
My main supplier of Sapim spokes refuses to build with/stock Mavic rims at all due to their ridiculous low tension limit and wonky build quality.

That’s funny, because the only thing I like about Mavic (at least the Open Pro) is the build quality. Everything else about their rims is totally antiquated.

That said, the new tubeless Mavic UST rims are game-changing for tubeless tires. I suspect everyone will adopt UST over the next ~5 years.

How is this actually any different than what WTB and now Alex are doing? Both have the recessed squared off bead area like Mavic? I always assumed the patent expired and Taiwan was “yolo”.

Did Mavic actually change anything besides working with a tire OEM that actually has their shit together?

On that note… last 10 Compass tires I have installed onto DT, Light Bicycle, and WTB rims have been the right kind of tight going on, gave a satisfying series of snaps when seating and locked the bead tight enough that when fully deflated things stayed in place.

Rim Shartq: I want to replace the rear rim on my hybrid because I rode it flat a few months back and really fucked it up. I also do not want to spend much money on the rebuild if possible. Current rim is 36h Velocity Dyad, is there anything that matches the dimensions of a Dyad but isn’t a Velocity so I could take it to a shop but have them re-use the spokes?..

I honestly don’t know what WTB and Alex are doing, and I haven’t read anything about the tech behind the new Mavic tubeless, but I do know that they have a bead and rim bed which allow basically effortless tubeless mounting with nothing but a floor pump, 100% of the time.

Or you can contact velocity and they’ll probably sell you a “crash replacement” rim for half price.

But even a half price Velocity rim is more expensive than many other good options and it’s still a velocity rim.
What about that Alex adventurer rim? Wasn’t that supposed to be cheap and good?

Cheap! And tubeless ready!
No idea if it even comes close to matching the ERD of the Dyad.

I think RR440 is the same, but that’s not exactly a hybrid rim

the 36h Alex Adventure 2 rims haven’t landed yet

My money is the main changes being to tire bead and tolerances. Seems to me that the “right” tire on the proper inner width rim yields the same results. Its just a crap shoot to find the right combo.

Might wait for these to come out. Probably wouldn’t kill me to get new spokes if need be

Lol, this seems to be the inevitable result of every rim swap idea

If you’re still a 650b rim brake dead-ender and like these rims you better grab the remaining stock real quick.

I’m building a front wheel with an h plus Hydra rim. The erd on the site is 589, had anyone measured it irl?

Pretty sure they’re still making an unmachined all-black model using the same extrusion

There’s an awesome looking wide/deep disc-only “Eroica” model coming eventually but I haven’t seen it outside of trade show pictures
