When you first got into fixed and/or road bikes

I started off following my brother’s example. He got a Barracuda when I was 10 or so, I bought a Rockhopper. He bought a Ciocc when I was 13 or 14, so I bought a yardsale Mangusta. He dropped cycling after a bit and sold his sweet-ass late 90’s yellow Ciocc right before I went off to college. Goddamn I wish he had sold it to me.

I went to college in NYC, so fixed gear was inevitable.

i needed a way to avoid public transport or worse…buying a car so i started looking at bike shops. everything was ugly or expensive. i was chatting to a guy at one and he says “build a singlespeed for cheap out of used parts.” he sends me to bicycle recycle and dude had an old no name in the back that he wanted to get rid of. $100 and a bunch of random parts later…my first bike in 5 years. my journey along the way is actually really well documented on BF and a few other forums. google aekeroo for some fucking silly questions.

I started racing velodrome when I was 7, about a year after starting racing BMX. That got me into riding track bikes. I rode velodrome for 3 years and raced BMX until I was 13. I continued riding dirt until I was 14 or so then had a few bad wrecks and my bike got stolen. Then I broke my back in a car wreck so I was off a bike until 19 when I bought a nice full suspension mountain bike. About 2 years ago I picked up a road bike again and also decided to build up a track bike. I rode a Jamis aurora conversion for quite awhile, then the IRO group buy frame and now the Samson. I’ve bought and sold 30 bikes or so in the last 18 months, it’s very much like I never stopped riding years ago.

Oh…wait.

I bought a fixie to get the bitches.

Can I see your Samson?

around christmas 05 we were over in the sandbox and they had these really nice spin bikes and i always saw this one officer watching tour de france videos on a mini dvd player and going to town. so one day i told him i wanted to try it (just for the workout). so we spun like every day for an hour, and he made me promise to keep riding when we got back. well after we got back he helped me buy a bike off of Ebay and then like 6 months later i converted it, and the rest is history. i guess i kinda had a mentor.

Hey, I first saw/rode a track bike on acid too!!! It started my interest in bikes.

i found a beta up yellow nishiki something in the dumpster at my first apartment about 7 years ago and grabbed it. fixed it up, cleaned it, replaced what needed replacing, and rode the shit out of it. i was planning on selling it because i was jobless, but i had so much fun i kept it.

now i just bought another nishiki, so it’s come full circle. oddly enough the g/f is out buying a nishiki as well at this very moment for herself. it’ll be her first road bike.

started BMXing when i was a kid. seeing Greg Lemond win his first TDF got me into roadbikes. started riding fixed about 5-6 years ago.
Hanging out with bold all the time didn’t hurt either. Dude only talks about bikes and typefaces.
Still, gerund doesn’t even ride fixed. But I have the ability to!
Ain’t that the truth!
I will fix this for you.

My Mom bought me a Liberia road bike when I was about 9. http://www.bikecult.com/works/archive/0 … riaRT.html

I stopped riding at 16 when I got my license. Lost my license for 1 year at 21 with a 16 mile commute.

I rode till I was 29 and stopped when my son was born and I bought my shop.

3 years ago I was fat and old so I started riding again.

I used to ride BMX at homemade dirt tracks all through my youth. Never raced or anything. Then a few years ago I wanted to ride a bike again. I got a BMX again but really disliked the lack of distance you could cover with it. So the next logical step was to look for a more “adult” bike.

I got an old Univega that was way too big for me. I did some pretty long rides on that bike but it was awesome being able to go so fast and far.

From there I’ve gone through some more fitting bikes. I got my first fixed gear about a year and a half ago. I’m kinda over fixed gear for now. I want a nice® road bike, really.

Rode bmx and small mountain bikes throughout childhood till about 12, started riding a magna again at about 14, then sometime last year i got a varsity at a thrift store because i realized how much easier and more practical it was to ride a road bike on the street than a mountain bike, then early this year i built my first conversion, been through a few conversions and road bikes since then. right now im working on building up a track bike cause at age 17 i dont have my drivers license and i bike everywhere for transportation and ride for fun.

I always rode bikes, just different bikes. As a kid I rode mostly mountain bikes. I had a really nice GT which I still have today sitting in the backyard, but I also have a nice Specialized that is actually my dad’s but I kinda just took it and rode it for a while until the derailuer broke which reminds me that I have to fix it.

Not too long ago, living in SF I see these messengers fly around the city beating traffic, and as a college student that commutes to the city for school. I just bought a road bike for 90 bux, rode that around but knowing in the back of my head that I wanted a fixed all along. After doing some research, I bought all the necessary parts and built my first bike as a fixed. I love riding it through the city.

riding BMX doesn’t count. i bet the majority of us rode BMX for years.

GT Mach one here.

edit: this is Jim. fuck you.

Jim you can’t post like that! My whole perception of reality was blown.

I had a ton of shitty ten-speeds through highschool.
I rode a crapass trek mtb through college.
Then it died and I bought a SS conversion out of some dude’s garage.
I crashed the fuck out of that bike, totaled the frame and cracked the fork.
Then I said “fuck it” and dropped the bucks on a Langster because I was sick of overcomplicated, shitty bikes breaking on me.
I rode the langster for a couple years and sold it to my friend last year when I got my Steamroller.
Now I have lots of different kinds of bikes.

Pawn shop did me a Pista straight trade for my katana.

of course bmx when i was a kid.
then road bikes about 10 years ago just because i started doing triathlons.
mostly i was into running but i liked cycling too and hated swimming.
no more triathloons.
fixed and track bikes about 2.5 years ago.
i still run sometimes but mostly just cycling now.
and commuting everyday.

I got one when I realized I had no skills with women. Shit doesn’t work. haha ror.

i needed something to go along with my PBR and girl jeans
