car broke and didn’t want to have to get a ride to work. I went to wally world and bought a pos Next bike that I had to fix multiple things on but got me to and from work. I found BF and did research realizing my bike was crap and not what I needed. Found an old Schwinn road bike for $50 and was much happier. When I got strong enough that switching gears wasn’t necessary I converted it to a SS. I fell off after a chain derailment about 3 weeks ago. This fucked up both of my wrist. While they heal my bike is at the shop getting converted to a FG
Had a rigid Peugeot Summit mountain bike which I rode the piss out of in middle school and some of high school, all through the trails and cobblestone roads outside of Stuttgart. When it was stolen out of my garage I started using my dad’s crappy Huffy and basically rode it until its need of repair made it unrideable and tossed it. Then I got an LBS to build me up a conversion from an old Gitane, which I wrecked, prompting me to buy tools and start building my own.
My story is basically me riding on my friend Julian’s old Schwinn ten-speed he gave me for 10 bucks.
Then I found BF and started hanging around SSFG.
It was like opening a whole new world to me.
Soon after I asked around to try a fixed-gear and Julian’s older brother had an IRO Mark V set up fixed.
The first time I rode it I fell in love. The next six months was me scraping togeher money to convert that old Schwinn into a fixed-gear.
I haven’t looked back since.
I loved riding as a teenager but when I got old enough, I got a Lambretta and that was it for bikes for a long time. I was living in LA and I got so sick of driving everywhere, and also decided I kind of hate internal combustion engines, so when I was able to move to Seattle about 6 years ago, first thing I did was get rid of my car and get back into biking. I really admired the track bikes I saw people riding, and I lucked into my own '74 Paramount track bike via craigslist, and I’ve been riding fixed gear ever since (and road bikes too, but mostly fixed).
still have that lambretta?
I went through a bunch of scooters, and I don’t have any left. The sad story is that that Lambretta was the one bike I held onto, cause it was such a nice bike (a 1965 midnight blue and white TV 175, if that means anything to you) and dragged around with me from the east coast to LA and finally up here to Seattle, where it was stolen like 5 days after I got here. It was a huge downer but I looked on it as a sign that it was time for me to be totally non-motorized. And I’ve since learned that those old two-stroke engines, although they are stingy with gas, actually pollute more in a few rides around town than your typical new car does in a year’s worth of driving. So I wouldn’t feel good about riding it anyway.
my dad gave me his schwinn world sport in 2002 when i went to college, found out about fixed gear, and converted it in early 2003 (back when FGG only have about 200 submissions!) when i picked up a cannondale road bike for $100 someone didnt claim at the LBS. about 10 bikes later, i have the stable as i want it, and i dont have any reason to change it now.
bmx as a kid and teenager. started driving, stopped for awhile, then bought a couple bmx bikes senior year of high school and freshman year of college. Realized bmx just wasn’t fast enough. Bought a hybrid, then a road SS, then i rode a steamroller. Converted the SS to fixed and actually only about two months ago but a real track bike. I love it. schwinn madison, also have a kilo tt. I see myself being into track bikes for a good long while.
i first got into fixed gear and/or road bikes yesterday.
Rode a MB as a kid and converted it to SS. Found a hillman track bike at a pawnshop and went everywhere on it. Slipped into a drug induced haze for 5 years and lost it along the way. Couple of years ago got sick of driving to work and been riding a fixed 20 miles everyday ever since…
i want to know what fucking pawnshops you guys go to.
I have never seen a track bike at a pawnshop…
I just got into it this morning.

In 1993, the DEA seized my collect of vintage Ferrari’s and '62 Mercedes 300SL in a raid. They claimed I had connections to the Cali cartel, which was never proven. To this day, I have yet to see my cars, and to this day, I ride a fixed gear bicycle.
True story.
How did you ahve the cash for those cars if you didn’t have ties to some kind of illegal money?
You a cop?
Wallstreet son.
Trolls out in force today, I’m disappointed it took so long.
Me? A Cop?
Ha.
I’m no fan of bacon.
