I left it out this year on a shelf in the bedroom and it all survived.

Oh, can I change my answer?
No we have edit tracking now.
Pulled the Pugsley (aka WorstBikePurchase™) out of my Colorado bike mess and did a 20km ride along the river to the other end of town.
I wish I liked the Pugsley more, because I can’t imagine I’m ever going to be able to talk someone into buying it out here.
Are fat bikes fun? Should I get one? I live in fatbikelandia so there are dozens for sale on the bike lists
Fat bikes are super fun but pugslies are not fun.
In my experience.
Yeah, you live in a place that probably has lots of places to ride them on groomed trails. I bet that would be real fun. I will probably get to try this in WV in February. I just liked riding my fat caad on single track coz had lefty suspension fork. But since in good snowlandia, you don’t need squishy fork.
I have to believe other (lighter) fat bikes are fun on groomed trails.
The pugsley is fun in the neighborhood bombing snowbanks and doing wheelies…but unless i’m just particularly bad at riding fat bikes, anytime i’ve attempted to ride in deep / loose / soft conditions i’ve ended up mostly pushing and carrying rather than riding. And this is the turdliest of all Surlys.
I’ve found in most city/commute situations studded tires are a better solution because they get down to the hard surface underneath the snow and give some traction.
Also, my knees don’t seem to like the 200+ Qfaktor
it’s not your skill at fat bikes, they don’t really do well in deep, loose or soft conditions as you’ve found. Skills With Phil came to a similar conclusion. They are entertaining on groomed snow and I suppose putzing around at a beach or in the woods.
My issue with the fat bike remains the same
If you have access to groomed snowy trails why suffer with zero radness on a slow bike when you could get moderately rad on very fast skis
Bingo, fat bikes are for people who don’t want to learn to ski
but why not just learn to ski
skate skis are like 1/6th the cost of a decent fatbike
it is literally impossible to get cold while skate skiing
it makes your whole body hurt
what’s not to love?
I bought a fatbike last winter, cuz not enough snow to xcski, but enough make my trail bike slide everywhere. It delivered.
Finally going to take it on groomed trails this winter in VT.
I’d like to try xcski. Not driving all the fuck way to Tahoe to try though.
if you do end up in tahoe for some reason, the xc skiing at royal gorge is sikkkkkk they have so many trails it’s bananas
Got a loaner set of Tacx rollers. Adjusted to their max length, they just barely work with my Vaya and Redline. Still not confident enough to move them out of a doorway. Each session’s first couple of minutes are the definition of white knuckle ride.
Honestly, I’d use your fastest bike. I always had a much easier time on my road bike with 25s than a cross bike…never tried a gravel or touring bike. More speed, more stability.
Roller chat is not winter cycling chat!
