Where’s the winter cycling thread?

What’s the sizing on those things like? It looks like, if the reviews are to be believed, that the now-demised japanther would work well for what the PNW calls winter, but they’ve got wildly different opinions on sizing.

I’m skipping cleats. Size of boot is not a problem — intentionally left tons of room so I could try out foot warmers or something.

I also recognize that -40 walking boots are going to perform worse on a bike, but I was hoping they’d be comfortable down to at least 0.

REI carries 45NRTH, and although the replacement for the Japanther is different in some ways they kept the basic boot. I’d try on a pair and see. I went a half size up to accommodate thicker socks, works well.

I have a pair of those 45nrth boots with some dumb viking name like the Ragnarok of the Tyr’s Blood or some shit. Anyway, they’re great down to about 15f. I stuck some chemical heaters in em the other day and was warm for two hours in single digits the other day. Def size up for thick socks.

Wow, I was about to complain about not being able to wear my summer mtb gloves on an early morning ride in the low 40s and ask about light crew sweaters to wear under a windbreaker for my extremely cold mornings down in the high 30s…

Anyways, a while back someone suggested gap merino sweaters for riding, I got a couple, they’re rad. Now I’m looking for some button down flannel that would work on the bike for layering. Any suggestions? Doesn’t need to be a bike brand, but does need to fit tall and lanky pretty well.

I like Eddie Bauer flannels; they carry both tall sizing and skinny fuck cuts, but probably not both at the same time. Always on sale.

I was given a smart wool button up that has been fantastic. I honestly wear it too much. It fits me well and I am 6’3"

Do they have to be wool? The “George” brand flannels at Walmart are a shockingly slim cut for a flannel sold at Walmart. They’re not super thick, but at $8 right now, what do you expect?

I’ve fallen out of love with wool for various reasons. I’ll look into this, thanks!

I have a northface flannel. It is very nice if you come across one for a decent price.

Saw some dude with the same helmet but he was riding an ugly razor e-scooter thing that you sit on.

Well that’s embarrassing.

He was cruising at a solid like 15mph :motor_scooter:

This is basically all I ride in when it’s cold, now. They’re all from thrift stores, though, and my favorite is a really soft Land’s End 100% cashmere sweater that I have been basically living in since I got it.

Since posting that I’ve discovered holes in one of my favorite sweaters. I know it’s cheap merino from gap, but it’s only got 3 years of use. Wool is bumming me out right now.

or just keep buying wool sweaters from Goodwill like Todd Bonzalez is talking about

My gap wool always got eaten by buggaloos

If you don’t store wool properly, that shit happens.

What’s the proper way to store wool? All mine is on cheap plastic hangers in a cedar lined closet.
