Which clipless setup?

Bumping because after two 200km rides in seven days in Vans, I need to get back into a clipless setup.

I have about 1500mi+ on Sidi Genius + Speedplay Zero. Have gotten used to the float, but the clip-in has never gotten totally wired for me yet. And they are no fun to walk in at all. We have hardwood floors at home, ends up being a major pain in the ass. Enough that I’ve tried to make Vans and clips/straps work, but they just don’t, I’m getting knee pain on 80+ mile rides that I never have had with the clipless setup, so I have to give in.

Thinking to go with Sidi Dominator + Speedplay Frog but have no experience with the Frogs. Anyone out there have them? Or should I just go with SPDs? I want the most recessed, most maintenance free pedal / cleat possible. The Speedplay Frogs seem pretty good in this regard.

i know a guy who uses frogs for cyclocross. he has been racing elite for a while, so i imagine they are good pedals.

i think bebops are even better, especially if you don’t have to worry about mud/snow getting in the cleats (plus i would probably sell my barely used stainless pair).

bebop has quite the walkability problem, though.

at least with the two MTB shoes i’ve used em with (sidi dragon and low-end older nikes)

Yeah I already have experienced crappy walkability for the past year, ready to try good walkability for a change.

Seems like the Frogs give a sort of similar clip-in feel to clips & straps, in that you slide your foot forward onto the pedal to clip in, kind like sticking it into the “stirrup” of a toe clip cage.

The new Dominators are kind of appealing because of replaceable treads on the sole, but the shoes are pricey as hell and the replacement treads cost as much as a lower end shoe.

Makes me want to try to figure out the Vans and clips/straps but I think it’s a non-starter. Expensive shoes & pedals are cheaper than new knees, at least.

Mitch found some freebox doms… before me… dick.

A bit off topic but I i really need help with finding wider cycling shoes.
Who else besides SIDI with their mega option makes shoes for people with wide feet?

specialized? northwave? bontrager? any company that markets towards us fat americans?

i don’t really know, but there has to be some options.
speaking of out of production

con: not readily, easily available.
not out of production. vp components (or is it vp one components?) from taiwan is making them. you can buy them direct from the bebop website or through seattle bike supply.

Northwaves supposedly run wider than other shoes.

Surfimp, I have some Frogs I can sell you for cheap if you want/need.

I have some Northwave Kameleon mtb shoes. I’ve got narrow feet, and they feel pretty wide to me.

fat americans doesn’t mean wider feet. I bought a pair of Shimanos cuz i heard from my friends here that they make em wide to tailor to the Asian feet. But after using them for the past 2 weeks i’ve come to the conclusion that they are still too narrow. And yea, Asians have MUCH wider feet than Caucasians.

I’ve read that several factors can make for wider feet, including:
-gaining weight (Americans)
-walking a lot (Asians and most non-Americans)
-getting pregnant (women)
-starting a new foot-intensive sport like running or cycling (after my first CX season I can no longer wear my Chuck Taylors)

so, like triple stated, I have never been in clips, and I am looking to put some on the trek for when I start my tour later this year. are there some that you guys like, for touring. I plan on riding 1300 miles to MPLS and then back down to TN to see my dad, so I am going to be putting on lots of miles. I want something that is going to be comfortable, and last. I don’t mind dropping some cash for something that will not be killing my feets and wanting me to stop riding.

I’ve rode in the MS 150 a few times and the tour de cure, but I have done them in chucks and new balances, and my feet didn’t really bother me, but riding anywhere between 65-100 miles a day for I don’t know how long… I want to be comfortable. Not to mention, once I get north, it will be starting to get cold, and I want to have some shoe covers to be able put on to keep said feets somewhat warm…

suggestions?

Fo what it’s worth, I’ve used both M520s and ATAC Aliums and while I really liked my M520s I didn’t like that to get to an acceptable spring tension for keeping my cleat locked in I had to end up with a really strong float return which was very unfomfortable. ATACs are nice and tight on the release without having an associated really strong float return.

Other than that my SPDs were solid, but I still greatly prefer the ATACs for reasons listed

When are you riding up here? What was your old name?

SPD’s are pretty good to start with I’ve always heard, due to the adjustable tension and rampant availability. I liked my SPD’s for a long time, but recently I’ve been totally sold on Crank Bros. Easy to clip in and out, and just enough wiggle room to play with my feet while riding.

Though, if it were me and I was going to be riding LONG distances daily, I’d be looking into SPD-SL’s or something similar with a wide coverage area.

I will start the trip in October, and it will take a couple of weeks to get there… I will crash and then take off heading back south…

I will have to give them a try…

Spds would be my vote. did 2000 miles or just road riding plus 1500 miles touring on my spd’s, loved em, and still do though my shoes stink from no socks/80 mile summer days collabo.
