Winter cycling 2013-2014

Goggles add an additional 10 degrees of tolerance for me. Wanna stop at 25 degrees? Suddenly 15 is a walk in the park.

Saw a girl in MN who felted wool sweaters and made bandanas out of them, which supposedly worked better than a traditional balaclava because a)wool b)more beard like, so less cold and sloppy. I just bought a sweater for those purposes. Make a neck gaiter, some arm warmers, toe covers, and other wooly accessories.

Have you heard about the new SWANT trend?

So glad you are keeping my particular weaknesses in mind…
The stepwise thing is working out: with a couple of days in the 20s under my belt, 34 seems positively pleasant.
Prolly a point of diminishing returns on that equation, tho’

Welcome to Wisconsin. When I was growing up, we’d start running around in short sleeved shirts the first day it got above freezing in the spring, and there wasn’t a cold I couldn’t get acclimated to until it got down to about -20F.

b-roll, let me know if you need folks to ride with. I had a pretty solid crew while I was there. They can teach you how to ride for 3+ hours on a Tuesday night in 10 degree weather. Then drink beer or whisky and BBQ outside. Just wait till the whole inverse colder when the sun comes up shit starts happening.

Also shit, you should ride on the lakes.

Fuck, how am I missing the WI winter right now… its was 60 degrees yesterday.

are you on the East or West side?

Winter-related medical news: One of my borken teeth from crashing on black ice two years ago was acting up, so out it went yesterday. Now i look like a cool pirate and am going to drop 3K on a dental implant.

f your smile and buy a bike

I’m East by Olbrich Gardens. Daily commute to the UW hospital.
The folks you’re describing sounds a little like the Magnus CX cru, that Trevor is associated with.
But then again every group of non-fred bikers I find around here drink hard and ride cold, (or claim to–the CX dudes I can vouch for).

You would be surprised how relaxing 20 is after you’ve had a week under 10. Brace yourself for the last week of Jan/first of Feb. From then on it’s cake.

Also, if you’re looking for a road trip tomorrow, House Party Cat 666 roles into MKE: https://www.facebook.com/events/627984053899231/

Missed it. Will be in the area for CX tomorrow, tho.
I got some of the new SKS Longboard Cromoplastics today, and they’ll be going on the commuter bike. I’ll report back, but I’m pretty sure that the verdict is totally awesome. QBP should be getting the full size run of 26" and 700c Longboards in over the next week. Definitely the best practical fender out there.

This concludes wet-weather product reviews by BC.
Verdict on these fenders is that they’re rad. Almost think I should have got the 29er version for my Cross Check, which would allow me to run comically large tires. As it is, I can comfortably fit a ~45 tire under these. Anyway, tested these by deliberately riding through puddles, and they passed with flying colors.

Thanks, Rivendell!

DQ: what makes these different from PB Cascadias? They look extremely similar.

They’re harder to install.

The real difference is that these are the Longboard fenders, meaning they extend much further than normal P45s or Cascadias.

For example:

That makes sense, the front there is definitely longer.

I did find SKS fenders to be harder to install but it looks like they’ve changed their hardware since then.

Enjoyably isolated 3 hour base ride in 25-45 mph winds, 18-25 F windchill, tonight. Off hours riding along the bike trails here is addictive. Next to no stop signs or road crossings in the 50 miles I did.

Going to take opportunity to thank Fergie for the tip on Fugu socks.

Yeah. Even in the high 40’s today it was a ghost town out there. It was awzum.

I have to admit this is tempting…

Cool weather has arrived. Been somewhat anxious about wearing tights with minimal space for layering underneath. -10 F windchill was quite comfortable on a ride short enough to not offer the chance to warm up. Gives me hope that with a thin insulating layer they should be good for longer rides in colder temps.

Pro team race cape is performing admirably. First day I’ve felt the need to wear a ls baselayer or anything warmer than a Summer jersey under it. Softshell jacket and wind vest should arrive today so I’ll have the chance to try them out too.

Well worth getting up and going for a ride during the coldest part of the day before the sun rises. Hope everyone else is enjoying the slower pace and subtle flush warmth of numb cheeks.

ordered booties today, plastic bags were good tho. Couldn’t clip in 90% of the time today though.

Didnt have traction in any snow deeper then 2 inches. Slick 45s are not winter tires.

also salsa cancelled their fat bike demo tomorrow because they didint want to drive up here in the snow…
