yes
no pegs
also, top tube mounted shifter.
thos oldschool flatland platform things
no.
minivelo
Yes. I had a mini-velo with one, was a blast.
Problem doing it on a normal BMX frame is getting enough seatpost height for gears to be worth having. You could start out with a cheap BMX frame and then maybe switch it out onto a Swift folder or a mini-velo.
No pegs.
Use one of the new asian Sturmey Archer jams with the aluminum hubshell — you could even use one of the 8-speed ones, they’re not that much more expensive and are meant for using on small wheels without hueg chainrings.
BIKESDIRECT IS MAKING A MINIVELO. SHOULD BE OUT THIS SPRING. I BOUGHT ONE OF THE PROTOBIKES AND WILL DEF TELL YOUS GUYS ALL ABOUT IT
I would rather you just posted a picture or 2 and kept to yourself about it.
Yeah, see, that’s exactly what I was thinking. I already have a 20" wheel with an old Sturmey but I can’t even decide if it would be worth the effort to put together. I have owned a few cool old BMX bikes and one newer Free Agent, but I never rode any of them.
FFFUUUUUUUUUU!!
GT made a prototype for a three speed geared bmx bike for racing in the late 90s.
Hmmm, I have a performer with a cracked rear mag…

it had a derailleur hanger and everything. i think it may have had typical bmx dropouts though.
gt did a lot of weird prototyping, like carbon front triangle frame with a disc brake and a full suspension frame.

I remember a Mongoose dude (Tim Hall?), on a full(?) suspension three speed 20" some time around '95.
I was way off. It was Brian Lopes and the bike had no suspension. Google also tells me that Profile made/makes a three speed Shimano spline hub.
Those geared bmx bikes were called parking lot racers I think. I’ve ridden one that was designed like a small pursuit bike. Downward sloping top tube and all. Most difficult, worst handling bike I’ve ever ridden.
[edit] Formula one bmx.
I rode something like this.
Heh, that’s terrible. There have been some legit multi-speed BMX bikes, especially cruisers.
I really want this 26" cruiser sitting at the LBS. Black and pink and offered at cost (about $250). Would need a long folder seatpost to make into sweet fixie.
