Naw the stock Canyon headsets are just garbage. Tried to talk them into getting Cane Creek to make an upgrade kit to no avail.
OK enginerd question. if one was to run a 1-1/8 steerer with a shim to 1-1/4 would that wedge design work properly? My rat-brain says “maybe”.
If the shim has a slot in it so it can compress onto the steerer. (like the typical shims that come with threadless 9/8" stems to allow them to work on a 1" steerer).
In today’s bike shop rant…
Customer brings in a bike for service. It’s way too small, she gets it serviced anyway and we offer to help her find something that fits better. This turns into spending hours with her trying bikes and settle on a bike we have in stock that fits. We do a handful of small changes to get everything dialed. We get to the point where we are at the end of our knowledge, she’s not willing to pay someone for a fit and we don’t have any saddles in stock to test out. We recommend she gets some saddles online from somewhere with a good return policy. She brings them in, we put them on the bike for her to try. Shes still not comfortable.
Today she comes in, tells us how disappointed and frustrated she is with us because we “didn’t do our homework and weren’t straight forward with her on our limitations.” She stormed out.
Fully expecting a bad google review about this one. We told her two weeks ago we were at the limit of what we could offer with fit services and even recommended fit specific spaces as well as products that we don’t offer. I’d hate to reply to a review with a screenshot of our texts but that may be what happens.
what part of “don’t cry or yell at me” did she not understand?
buyer’s remorse becomes quite complex for some groups of people, sorry you have to deal with this. there’s really few things more frustrating than knowing you’ve done all you can to help someone with their problem and they refuse to progress to the next steps on their own.
Best/worst part is we didn’t take a cent from her
wait, this
didn’t mean she bought the bike that fit from you?
Correct. Just bar height, angle, saddle position, etc. And then later a few saddles.
The shop she had just bought her too small bike from didn’t even give her a chance to get on something that fits correctly and us trying to remedy that turned into wasting our time and getting shit on.
in any other sport, this service is a $50-150 + parts customization to be performed after the equipment is purchased in its initial, default specification
Yup. That’s how it usually goes. Thought we were being helpful but nah.
like my old boss used to say- show initiative and get fucked every time
No good deed goes unpunished.
But yeah…. We don’t do free customization any more or even retail credits for things like tire upgrades. When you don’t offer such things, you rarely have to do them.
Yeah, thats just a pit waiting for you to fall in. Some people cannot be made happy
Yah, you’re in business to make money so unless you’re ready to charge for your time fitting just hit that rolodex and send em on the way.
Yep, if it’s something I think will be a waste of time I just refer them out. I definitely came up in a shop that subscribed to the bike shop war mentality where if you can’t do it, nobody in town can (or just being bull-headed and taking on pointless/unprofitable jobs). But man, what a waste of energy.
Referring them out is almost always better in the long run compared to under-delivering.
Also if it’s not a service you’re set up for and can charge money for why are you doin it? There’s like community service (lemme put your saddle up, lemme put your bars at the right angle) and there’s fit service (you really need to do some yoga and weightlifting with a personal trainer if you’re going to ride a road bike) and those are two very different conversations.
counterpoint- entitled fucks from northwest philadelphia
refer them out and get a bad review, do the work and maybe, just maybe- you don’t get a review at all. or maybe they give a good review.
either way you’re not getting paid most of the time tho
Oh yeah I know the type they don’t like getting told no but you’re just trying to minimize the amount of time you spend talking to them.
No pay, no wrench. Fuck em. As a shop owner, I have much more leeway with this, but a bad review is just an excuse to clap back at them for their shitty behavior shartmo.
oh i agree with you, this is just a super “oooh shop local nice small shops local” white people area and it can be hard to not get sucked into trying to be the nice local shop
