A safe space to complain about jackass humans

Honestly I believe the drivers who are loudest about bikes being unsafe are projecting. They are constantly distracted and constantly having near misses with cyclists and pedestrians and laying the fault on vulnerable road users is the only way they can rationalize their driving dependency

This is a great point.

“Biking is unsafe (because of people who drive like me)”

I just don’t buy vc at all. Riding a bike or walking down the street safely shouldn’t demand the same skill as driving an eighteen wheeler or a car. It needs to be undemanding and with lots of tolerance for error and inattention. Atmo this guys American macho man individualism is, in this case and almost all others, primarily an excuse for rich people not to pay their taxes so we can have safe streets. Because the victims are the ones at fault. This stuff doesn’t belong itt imo.

John forester is definitely not my hero but I think he helped deliver one critical victory to cyclists everywhere: inviolable right to ride our bikes in the street whenever we damn please.

I don’t know what exactly that guy advocates but one thing I’ve learned from riding my bike in nyc is look out for #1 and forget everything else. (Though personally I do not forget to be courteous to pedestrians and the rare good driver.)

I tried explaining this to my driver-but-learning wife:

“I approach a big intersection at 10pm. The light is red. I can’t see any cars coming in either direction. I’m going to run the red light on my bike because that is safer than waiting for my own green and assuming the cars that may or may not arrive will stop for their own red light”

But I think she just hears

“run the red light on my bike” lol

I drove my family around last night, the first time I’ve personally driven the car in maybe four months, and Ash kept ragging on me for taking the routes that are good on a bike because they’re apparently not good in a car. Got us to and from our destination safely and in good time though so I guess they were fine in a car too.

I’ll just leave this here

Police body camera footage of DeGise from last November, published by Hudson County View, shows her pleading with a Hoboken police officer to not tow her illegally parked vehicle, which had not been registered since 2019.

Except it’s not.
It’s just a regular ass one way residential street with ill conceived two way bike lane paint and a shitload of speed bumps.
My mission in life is to have Glenwood closed to cars and traffic and turned into a true greenway. A thoroughfare for bicycles and pedestrians. I’m in touch with our alder and she seems receptive but I’m sure there’s more to it than convincing one of the most progressive alders in Chicago that bikes are good.

Strong disagree(city dependent). Good bike routes in Seattle often take you through lower traffic neighborhood streets that have less controls for traffic. They stay safe if cars don’t drive on them but have less infrastructure, like crosswalk flashers, signals, bigger visibility/wider lanes etc.

I’ll take a less direct route to stay on an arterial rather than cut through a neighborhood I would ride through on my bike because through traffic should be banned from all non arterial streets.

I completely agree with you.
I’m still gonna avoid the intersection of Sheridan, Loyola, Arthur and the Red Line at all fucking cost. Whether I’m on a bike or in a car. The only reasonable way to pass through that nightmare is on the L.

I ride that on my bike every other day!

Why?

Greenwood is too slow when exercise biking. I get on it in Evanston before the bend and get off at Devon to head down winthrop

Ryan, it’s GLENwood. Not to be confused with GREENview two blocks west. Both of which intersect with and are not to be confused with glenVIEW.

And if you go north a few blocks, you hit greenLEAF.
