We have a bunch of places where the bike lane is elevated in front of bus stops which is extra annoying because then people waiting for the bus are just standing in the middle or completely blocking the bike lane.
At the very least it’s going to slow people down on this stretch, which is really great stuff
This was a problem that I immediately identified and the bus stops aren’t even built yet.
Yeah, it’ll totally be an issue if those are popular stops. If there’s a bus pulled up when you’re passing through, someone will walk in front of you without looking 100% of the time. Just take it as an opportunity to mellow out for a sec.
Well, the project is in full swing as of this morning with street eaters tearing up the old asphalt where the new lane is going! Auto traffic was totally fucked and I almost got right hooked by a frustrated driver making an unsignaled turn into a gas station. I think I’ll avoid this stretch of Clark for a few months.
It’s great that they started that and left the new Dearborn stretch from north to the river 80% done
Gotta love it!
They’ll get this 80% of the way and then go back to finish Dearborn.
The anecdote is Chicago specific but may apply in other big cities
The Bike Lane Uprising app is supposedly effective at getting bike lane parkers fined if you upload pictures there
Check out the new bike lane!
And finally, to add insult to injury this person decided to block the entry to the curb protected section approaching the corner of Clark and Irving.
I realize Car Brain is a terminal condition but I’ll never get how people get so bent out of shape if you park on a line in a lot but parking all over bike lane paint is
The other thing that fuckin sucks is it only take one person who doesn’t give a shit to have everybody else thinking it must be cool because somebody else did it
I don’t think most car people think it’s ok to do either. Willing to bet the Venn diagram of parking lot double parkers and bike lane parkers has a significant intersection.
I mean it kinda doesn’t matter what %age of pious, conscientious drivers would never park in a bike lane if there’s always enough who will that the bike lane is perpetually blocked as I’m sure is the case in Rusty’s situation
We’re definitely in agreement about that point
I’m optimistic that this bike lane being brand new and not yet having its flexi bollards, signage and green paint has people confused.
I think there’s a little learning curve. It was the same on Blue Island when they installed the new protected bike lanes there. A week or two after install CDOT (?) sent out some folks with flyers and put up some signs and bollards and it seemed mostly better last time I went that way
This has been the slow Dearborn process, we seem to get a couple blocks of green and better signage every couple weekends and it’s getting better every day on those blocks
Old habits die hard and gd I love the green bike lanes
Yeah, swapping the bike lane and auto parking and painting the bike lane green is a hugely effective safety measure for everyone. Cyclists are now protected from the auto traffic by the line of parked cars and the drivers perceive the street to be narrower and drive slower accordingly. It’s amazing what huge improvements can be made with just a bunch of paint.
The only thing this sketches me out with is right turns… There are a couple like this in seattle that I end up taking the lane in…
yeah, there is a specific parking protected bike lane in denver that i never use because it’s on a road with a lot of hotels, so there’s always a bunch of passengers opening their doors without looking (in which case you have nowhere to go because you’re trapped between the curb and the cars), people walking obliviously to their ubers, and families unloading their luggage in the bike lane.
parking protected bike lanes also just sketch me out because they put you out of sight of cars who will right hook you without a second thought
but also i don’t have any better suggestions
