A safe space to complain about jackass humans

The one time I’ve been hit by a car it was trying to pull a right across my lane, Stockholm had just suffered the terror attack and he was trying to get out of the city, I knew nothing about any of that, so I was furious. I didn’t fall, gently leaned my bike on a pole, not so gently made him pull over and get out. I’m certain he thought I was going to beat the shit out of him. I can’t believe he got out, but all I wanted was to level tue field before berating him for being an asshole.

Of course as soon as he told me why he was in such a hurry I checked if he was ok and demanded he leave as fast as he could. He gave me his business card to call him in case of damages to the bike.

I feel like like that probably would have gone differently in the USA.

Yeah, there are multiple terror attacks here daily and the driver would’ve shot him.

I got into an argument with a dude who passed too close one time. After 30s of swearing at each other he stopped and then apologized. He said he was really hung over and was sorry for passing so close.

Near the top of my local trail access rd I started to hear a drone. Ok, whatever, some droner harshing my buzz, nbd. Then I heard the sound of crunching gravel and what else appears around the bend but a frickin electric hummer.

Ok whatever, kinda annoying cuz cars aren’t even allowed here but the local yokels drive up all the time. So he turns around at the bend and points himself upward. I continue my ride to the top and the dude honks at me and gestures as if to fling me out of his way as I pass his stopped vehicle.

Wow, weird, guess I’ll just ignore that this is happening and keep pedaling. After a few seconds I hear him start to move, and the fucker just drives a few feet behind me until I pull over and stop because that’s the most annoying thing in the world in basically any context. As he rolls by he rolls down his window and says something to the effect of, “don’t talk, I’m filming.” Lol like I give a shit. Somehow I didnt allow my city instincts to take over and smash his stupid hummer mirror. I just said, “wow, that’s rude”.

I got to the top, which was just a minute or two away, and got the number for the park ranger for the district. By the time I was on the phone with a very nice dispatcher, he was coming back down the road and the timing was perfect for me to read his plate to her lol. He made some gestures that I took as him communicating that now he wanted to be apologetic even if I didn’t happen to be actively reading his plate to someone on the phone. I just nodded at him and walked away lol. Bye bitch. Two big cameras on gimbals, a drone, and manufacturer plates. Legit filming like a local dealer ad or something.

This bike path blocker is ok, he’s installing bollards to stop fools from driving their foolmobiles onto the bike path.

You get bollards?

How’s he going to get out of the bike lane once the bollards are up?

This is unprecedented!

I was thinking just this. He’s painted himself into a corner!

he’s going to drive over them like everyone else will in a few weeks

Oh, yeah, hey, lets make it even easier for jackasses to get their license. What a fucking stupid waste of time and money and human effort. Fuck Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. I guess if you’re secretary of state, you’re a carbrained jagoff by default.

I disagree with you on this one.

It sucks but for many people driver’s licenses and other DMV services are needed for their job or other life situation. And visiting the DMV is a royal PITA that takes up 1/2 a day or more. And who does that impact most? Those folks who can least afford to take a half day off work to get their license renewed.

I don’t see this as a program that incentivizes driving. I see this as a program designed to help folks who otherwise the system screws.

yep, this is a “make it easier for people to vote/get a job/rent an apt” program ATMO

I see y’all’s points but shouldn’t we separate the ability get a job or find housing from the driver’s licenseing process entirely? That just kicks people who can’t or won’t drive out of society. Are state ids still a thing? I had one in high school.

And sorry, saying that is should be easier to get a DL is carbrain thinking.
It should be harder! It should be the most gate kept thing in society! It should be harder than becoming a forklift operator!

Why do I have to recertify my real estate license annually, but I took one test one time when I was 19 and I can drive for life?!? That’s insane!

they are. from the article you shared with us…

They will allow Illinoisians to renew their driver’s licenses, apply for a state ID or temporary visitor driver’s license, renew vehicle registration, purchase vehicle stickers, apply for a Real ID, apply for a replacement or corrected driver’s license or state ID, join the Illinois Organ and Tissue Donor Registry and register to vote.

it sounds like this program is for taking care of administrative stuff. it’s not a place where they’re handing out brand new driving licenses willy nilly

it’s a good thing

When we talk about harder/easier to get a license, the word get is actually describing two different things.

  1. Difficulty of passing a test or showing competency etc.
  2. Inconvenience of physically gaining possession of the license itself.

I agree with you about point #1, that being issues a license by the state should require a more thorough show of competency and should be revoked more frequently for infractions.

What I was talking about with the mobile DMV vans is about point #2, which I believe making it easier to do the legwork and paperwork is a good thing in this context.

And to some extent, given People Gonna Drive, I wonder how much making sure they are licensed helps with safety etc. Unlicensed, unregistered, uninsured cars are a huge problem here and I’m going to guess they account for an oversized share of crashes given what I see from cars with raggedy ass paper plates. Does reducing a barrier to a license aid compliance in other areas? Probably not easy research to do for obvious reasons

I know that getting a new drivers license here is a huge pain in the ass because it’s all by reservation and you either have to reserve months in advance or snag a same day appointment first thing in the morning. And I’m just going to take a guess that people will just drive anyway if their appointment is 3 months out, and then after 3 months and you haven’t been busted, why bother?
