i think people should have to retest every ten years. I’m aware there are social justice reasons not to do this. i don’t care, it’s ridiculous how we do it

Agreed. Should also be easier to lose your license. And traffic laws should be enforced. And the efficiency exemption for trucks should go away. And we should pay the actual cost of driving. And there’s all sorts of issues tied up in all of that but maybe everyone just needs to suffer to get it done.

It’s a two prong approach, make driving totally miserable and present more pleasant alternatives.
Oh, and also undo a century of auto industry propaganda

effectively banning Chinese EVs is the opposite direction we should be taking so i have little hope

Let’s solve climate change by creating and marketing green products along side the traditional ones for “climate conscious” people to buy.

Let’s solve homelessness by getting cops to chase people around the city from camp yo camp in an attempt to preserve home value.

Let’s solve traffic by building more car only infrastructure and making cars bigger and more expensive.

Let’s fix health care by exposing poor people to far more environmental risk factors for long term illness and then letting them die.

Let’s solve immigration by imprisoning migrants and making it worse here for them than if they stayed in their home country.

What happens to people who need to drive but have a suspended license? Uninsured and suspended drivers these days are causing everyone’s insurance rates to go up. Temp plates are a problem too with car registration barriers like inspections and exorbitant fees.

Sure most people follow the rules but the small minority who don’t probably account for most of the jackassery. Only solution is removing cars from the roads

Insurance rates are wild here. As are the amount of uninsured, unlicensed and unregistered drivers. If you don’t have one of those things there needs to be a mechanism to enforce you not driving.

If you need to drive but get your license suspended then maybe you shouldn’t have gotten your license suspended.

Enforcement for the jackasses! Use speed and red light cameras! Investigate when they take pics of cars with fake plates! Revoke driving privileges!

Maybe someday we will have universal traffic calming and people will respect each other and cycles of poverty will end. But I don’t really see that happening in my lifetime in America.

i have literally zero data to back this up but strongly believe JUST speed and red light cameras would be a huge improvement over the nothing we have now

We have data in Philly to back this up. Traffic related injuries down like 75% or something wild like that.

Edit: here’s a good synopsis Before and After Roosevelt Boulevard's Speed Cameras | Streetlight Data

Alls I know is that the last time a speed camera ticket came to the house (because ash was speeding in a school zone :colbert:) it was for $35 and that’s not nearly enough!

DC has insane red light, speed, and stop sign cameras. Busses also have automated cameras for bus stop blocking and bus lane violations.

The problem is there are no boot/impound crews, the city will still let you renew your license and get new registration even with unpaid tickets, and there is no enforcement/reciprocity with neighbors VA and MD.

So we get jagoffs with $1000s in fines continuing to rack them up with no penalty.

I feel this way often, especially after seeing a massive increase in jackass driving habits round these parts.

But then I imagine the first time doing it, and hitting someone in a legitimate emergency situation.

shithead racist neighbour lost his license for drink driving, just had to show up to court and tell them he needed it to get to work and he got it back. absolute farce of a system.

I think Australia must rival the USA for oblivious car culture.

yeah, it’s pretty bad. Kid of said racist shithead gets dropped by car to school, which is ~700 metres away. There are kids that live even closer that get dropped by car. We often walk home quicker than the kids that get driven. I know these parents know how to walk, they do it every now and then.

A crosswalk that crosses a busy road leading into downtown got infrastructuralized. One single bollard that blends with the crosswalk paint and looks like it’s been used previously.
