Theres a film shoot happening on my street for some cop show and the two real cops on motorcycles who are there to direct traffic or something are on motos with no plates at all.
I didn’t get a photo but some jagoffs left a couple delivery scooters in the bus stop (road) outside my front door. We were gonna 311 them but before we could the city came and threw them on a flat bed and towed them away.
No idea why they were parked there, there was tons of other street parking and it’s a super busy street, people usually park on side streets.
In some related but positive news, I put in a request with 311 for a crosswalk at a spot where the city put in sidewalks that cross a street where people fly way too fuckin fast around a corner. I think it took a couple months but I got an email from a traffic engineer at the city that they were going to install one! Flash forward a couple more months:
Still in progress. Don’t think we’ll get any blinking lights but I do believe they are going to pour a curb where that oval is drawn. It is for sure gonna take some licks from shithead drivers but after a couple of weeks I think they will either slow the fuck down or stop cutting through on this street!
Another shitty ny thing I don’t see other places, drivers making a left turn from a one way onto a two way do it at an angle that runs over every single stripe in the crosswalk.
We don’t have NYC-style crosswalks where I live (at least that I’m aware of), but I basically never see a driver take a left turn without cutting across the right lane of the street onto which they are turning. Everyone starts turning way too early, before they’re even in the intersection.
Some updates on “my” crosswalk, might get pictures later:
Doesn’t look like a curb is coming unfortunately. Yesterday they put up one of those flappy “STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK” signs. Ok guess I’ll take what I can get! Then my wife gets home and is pissed because the sign fell over already because presumably somebody hit it. I go out and stand the thing back up, but honestly it was not anchored very well. It was attached in this weird twist-lock way and only had 3 out of 4 bolts holding it in. Hmmm
This morning I had to take the dogs on a mini-walk so we went to check the sign. It was still upright but while we were there it fell over. Honestly I think the wind or the wake from a car knocked it over because I didn’t see a car hit it. Disappointing! I stood it up again while hanging on to the dogs. A car approches. They look like they are trying to figure out how to get past me. I look at them and point at the sign and they finally come to a stop. Wow!
A few hours later I go for my bike ride. Now the sign is gone but they’ve put up 8 or so white and yellow flex posts. Wow! By the time I get home, one of the white flex posts already has a tire mark on it. I do some umarell-esque observation and am satisfied that cars are slowing down when they see the posts, though I think I am going to be making a lot of 311 maintenance requests in the future once the drunk drivers start having their fun with them.
Gotta go pick up the kid from daycare soon, who knows what I’ll see next!
So here’s my big question: the problem with filling the posts up with concrete is that they become an even bigger hazard for people outside of cars. But is there some sort of white or yellow paint that will mark cars that hit the posts?
