Yeah I’m approaching the max pressure, but it’s also the cheapest full-squish bike that Trek made for 2020 so the shock isn’t anything terribly special.
Crazy what a diff a good shock makes. Suddenly you can, like, pop off shit, move your bike around on the trail way better because it is more active while still providing all the damping goodness you need.
I’m still stuck with a mid-tier Rockfox shock on the front but really want to get up into a nicer Fox because I imagine it’ll be just as dramatic a change.
even my cheapo fox 34 rhythm w grip (not fit4) is heaps better than any rockshox i’ve ridden
My 34 performance with grip on trance 29 is nice. I know I probably ran my old 36 a little too stiff, so I was surprised how good it felt.
My lyrik with new debonair spring is better, though. Really like the upgrade you speak of in the shock, and it was only a $25 part that really set it apart. Also rode a lyrik on the ebike and front end was same amount of amazing.
It’s fucking crazy how good mid-tier suspension is now. When I first got my Ibis I was blown away how good the grip damper Fox 34 was compared to the FIT stuff from a few years before.
I have a few years old Yari that I think is not really upgradeable and am not impressed with the sweet spot on it. Sometimes I can dial it in to feel OK but am generally not digging it. It could be that it just does the job and doesn’t get in the way, but I feel like I could do better.
Yeah, I think most Yari forks have the motion control damper, not the better charger, which are up to charger 2.1 or something now. So, understandable that it ain’t great or easy to dial in.
you still have a sentinel from a few years back?
pretty sure you can put a new damper in that.
Ah yeah maybe I have seen that but at that price I’ll just buy a take-off better fork.
yeah it’s much less on qbp… but still not the cheapest. my now previous partner/ex put on in his fork after blowing up the damper twice in his yari and he had the same bike or similar as you i think? (2018 alloy sentinel with nx).
the rtc3 one is cheaper and still way better than what’s on the yari.
That’s my exact bike! Well, I guess I can include it in my dealz searches once I’m looking for that again instead of a car lol
Spot Rocker 29 geared fits all my needs for xc / poopbarning, 2 bottle mounts in small, 67HTA, 75.5 STA, 1.3 kg frame, only bummer is 29 2.4 max tyre/not 27.5. Thoughts on alternatives that won’t cost an arm and leg? China carb, Watly ti?
i think i successfully rebuilt my fork with new oil and all that stuff. it bounces nicely in the basement and doesn’t stick like it used to before. once the trails dry out i can ride it for real and see if it explodes itself and i die.
Put a soft-hold on a Vassago Optimus Ti today. Really been wanting to sip the 29+ Kool-aid for awhile after some of my last SoCal desert adventures dragged me through a lot of sand.
Hell yeah. If I ever start riding my MTB enough to warrant a new one, that frame is on the short list.
Just released, but maybe the newer Float X could be worth researching.
The Float X requires approximately 40psi less pressure than the DPX2 to achieve the same amount of sag thanks to its larger piston area. That means heavier riders will be less likely to get tennis elbow inflating their shock to the correct pressure, and it also broadens the range of bikes that the Float X should work well with.
Thinking about a Santa Cruz 5010 or an Ibis Mojo 4 as my next mtb and first FS to replace my Kona Honzo. Does anyone have strong opinions on either of these? Probably going with the most basic build/group on either. Looks like there is only one local Ibis dealer around here and they don’t have the Mojo listed on their site, so I may be out of luck when it comes to a test ride. Is there anything similar I should strongly consider? I saw Yeti has a similar style bike in the SB140
Has anyone heard anything about what inventory is looking like from either brand? Thanks in advance!
I haven’t ridden the current version of either of those, but my experience with the previous been 5010 was real underwhelming and I loved my mojo 3.
Any reason you’re not thinking 29? I’d be after a Ripley if I didn’t live in CO and tend towards gnarlier trails.
Not any great reason, just heard that 27.5 can feel more lively and fun and that sounds pretty cool.
