Babby, It's Cold Outside

First day of the Campy dayglow tights. AWW YEAH.

TBH I think my gore windstopper bib knickers are warmer.

re: dayglo tights

what do you guys like for tights I can wear over bibs? i currently only have some thermal base layer tights, and the elastic is clapped out so they are awkwardly baggy, and have a awkward fly in the front, which makes me a little :colbert: about wearing them as an outerlayer. obv dayglo/taf is a plus.

I liked the Pearl Izumi thermal tights sans chamois

I think that’s what I have

Today is the first day that daytime temperature has fallen below 70F here in LA. It’s gonna be chilly.

Still upper 60s here in Boston which is not that strange for this time of year but when it gets cold it will happen fast and furious.
Personally I’m excited for another year 9+ ft of snowfall. If its going to be miserably cold anyways, might as well have the city be practically shut down for a month while I ride into huge snow drifts.

Going into the next winter with a drop bar salt grinding bike (my beloved Cross Check, now on snow duty). I’ve always had trouble keeping my hands warm, but after some surgery on one wrist the circulation is especially bad for my right hand. Looking for recs for drop bar Pogies–Bar Mitts are awfully thin, but haven’t seen any serious alternatives out there. Also considering a battery powered handwarming option, if anyone has experience with that stuff. The internet findings are varied and nebulous.

???

Ski gloves and those chemical heaters? You can buy a winter’s worth of them at Costco for like $30. If bar mitts plus thick gloves plus chemical heaters don’t do it you are probably SOL

Have you used them, though? I was and still am quite surprised by how warm they can be. And I am one whose hands and feet freeze no matter what gloves or winter shoes+covers I throw on them. It was odd to wear defeet wool gloves and bar mitts at freezing and be fine. I snagged a larger set so I can probably wear thicker gloves if I need to.

i wore these OR mitts when it was in the single digits and snowing last year:

stayed warm but i wasn’t be able to operate shifters with them.

As an unapologetic Bar Mitts enthusiast, I completely agree. I used them both for commuting and for all-day long rides in frigid 10° weather, wearing nothing but some thin wool gloves underneath. They don’t need to be thick to accomplish their goal.

You probably need to think of bar mitts as being more like hand fairings than glove replacements. They are mostly keeping cold air off your hands as you keep moving as opposed to insulating your hands.

I’m also wondering if having thicker cushion drop bar tape (vs thin porous tape) would keep your hands warmer in the barmitts.
I also recently picked up some carbon drop bar levers in the hopes that they are a little warmer and don’t pull the heat from my fingertips like alloy lever blades

I have the regular Bar Mitts and can’t imagine needing more. They are fucking awesome.

What I did for a while was roll a cut-up 23c tube over the end of my levers. I think it helped out a little but with gloves I’m not sure it’s a huge difference.

For y’all flat bar commuting dudes I use these in flouro green and they make a big difference on not quite glove weather but chilly days.

I put in a winter and a half with them (flat bar version), with varying weights of gloves in combination. Switched to Moose Mitts last year and would never go back. Unfortunately MM and everyone else that I’ve looked into making high-fluff pogies does not have a drop-bar design. Guess I’ll be stocking up on the chemical warmer thingies, though I hate the disposable aspect.

I just got me some cold hands!

I like jl / jl velo for tights in super long x skinny sizeways

Just searched on amazon and looks like they have reusable microwave versions. Not sure how well they would work. Do you have a microwave on both ends of your typical ride? You could have a set of chemical warmers in the bike bag and use the reusable hand warmers most of the time.

I use the elastic tops from a pair of wool socks as extended wrist warmers - really cold days I put a chem heat pack under them right on the wrist veins.
