strava more like starvya (of ur data)
At this point all of my ride data is in Strava or I’d switch to ridewithgps or something to spam people with my boring commute miles. However, it’s not like I care about it that much, but honestly sometimes I look at old good rides when I’m feeling down. I especially like some of the obscure segments when 95% of the people on the leaderboard are people I know.
I sure as shit ain’t paying strava for the leaderboards. I‘d guess most wont.
Someone will come up with a Private/Incognito tab hack, I’m sure of it.
/workplace snark, don’t @ me.
FWIW, you can bulk export your Strava data and upload at another service. I did it to test some stuff earlier today, and it was easy.
i already got the only contended KOMs i’ll ever get so whatever. bummerooni
I also enjoy the social aspect of Strava where you get to know the other alpha dorks in your area and engage in a little friendly competition. Segments really help with that. Meh too bad.
Prefer RWGPS to Strava
I suspect this will backfire. 70% of the point of segments is to have a huge leaderboard that’s ALL the fast guys in the area so I know how slow I am. If it’s not all the fast guys anymore, I’ve lost interest.
ok i actually looked it up and you guys are making a big deal out of this.
Free users will still be able to see the top 10 all-time efforts for men and women, create new segments, explore and search segments, flag segments, see their own achievements and earn segments, personal records and all the other fun stuff that may help get you up in the morning.
So wait, what can I not do now? See that I’m 437 out of 1,212 on a segment?
I think you can still do that. I looked yesterday and I couldn’t tell the difference.
I have komoot. You can download local maps, which can also be done with Google maps, but the might be nicer with your data.
I think the uproar is more that free users can’t see their friends leaderboards anymore.
It’s basically becoming a social network with a monthly subscription. I don’t use any of the paid features and ride solo 90% of the time. This isn’t going to effect me.
It sounds like the company as a whole is hurting for cash to keep operating. Maybe they’re trying to mimic the success of Zwift? Who knows?
I was trying to work out why I still use Strava. I think it’s a good place to keep my data from different devices (Garmin and bryron) and I could get a different brand in the future. I like the idea that I could use my phone to record if I wanted to. It helps me with mileage on my running shoes. And it’s easy to share.
What else could I use?
I still use Garmin Connect on my phone which uploads to my Garmin acct first, then bounces the upload to RWGPS and Strava. As ride repositories go there are a good number of options.
Speaking of GPS trackers, RWGPS just unveiled their new tool for converting your buddy’s recorded ride into a real route that has turn by turn cues that follow roads/trails instead of a jagged line on a map.

I’m surprised the route-building feature has not been mentioned as much as the leaderboards. It’s basically all I use Strava for since I plan a lot of group rides and having access to their heatmap is crucial for finding common/safe routes around the city. There’s no turn-by-turn but being able to create a route on my computer, load up my mobile app seconds later and follow the route is sooo crucial. Sounds like RWGPS also supports this? Do they have a heatmap or will I have to rely on Google’s Bicycling layer only?
