Bike blerg thread

I think the point of a lot of this stuff is that it doesn’t matter if you personally care about it.

Had an alu TCX once, that I bought frame only. I wound up tracking down a Cannondale Caadx fork that was also 1 1/4.

Especially right now, culturally and politically, we have bigger fish to fry than this tasteless bike model name.

Dang. If you’d only told me that 5 years ago I could have passed in on to him. I may still let him know. I think he’s still got the bike.

My dudes, the perpetuation of this type of branding as okay/status quo/I don’t care is super problematic.

Is this not the right thread to complain about tasteless bike (whatever) in?

I know.

I don’t know what to do about it so I’m not losing any sleep over it. There are many other causes I will fully get behind, but this is not one of them.

Personally, I think the branding is more offensive in how clumsy it is then how offensive it is in meaning… but she’s got a point.

theres a big difference between losing sleep and saying i dont care, whatever

personally taking something on as a cause vs just validating something as being real to others

Actually, you’re right, this is the right thread for this. My fault.

I think Marin is trying to Cash in on Johnny cred (dad joke) more than somehow make money off the prison industrial complex, BUT I would still be happy if they were pressured to donate like a bong to prison libraries or whatever.

Here’s the thing… regardless of the intentions of Marin Bikes, systemic racism measurably impacts the health, wealth, life expectancy, infant mortality, incarceration rates, etc. of millions of POC. That is real whether white folx care to acknowledge it or not. When we see shit like this and for whatever reason, defend these actions or even say “hey, it’s no big deal,” it’s perpetuating centuries old beliefs and systems of oppression that are literally killing people of color.

I’m really just here to talk about bikes and get rad but as a public servant benefitting from white privilege, I can’t not speak up.

I feel like the fight should be against the prison system and the judicial system that feeds into it, not a bike company who makes a poor marketing decision.

You can react to and push back against both atmo.

I mean I wasn’t really planning on buying a marin in the first place. I guess I can be doubly sure I won’t now.

I’ll leave my personal life out of this for the most part. The prison system and all its feeders are a huge problem and have effected my life and my family’s life more than I’ll ever know. Millions of lives effected, billions of dollars made and then spent protecting it. No arguing the system needs to be completely dismantled.

Marin bikes marketing department made a mistake, one that could easily be pointed out to them and remedied in the future. Making them aware of this is probably the most powerful thing anyone here can do. Who’s contacted them about this so they’re able to learn? Who will go beyond posting about this in an obscure fixie forum from 2008?

Exactly.

I contacted Marin months ago and… crickets.

To me, it felt like making Tarck aware and getting more males voice on board could be a powerful tool. Given the reception, I don’t expect that many folks here will take action (maybe some Femme/Trans/Non-Binary/Women/Tender Dude lurkers will step up? I see you.) but hopefully the discussion will have planted some seeds of awareness. I mean, no one has to lose sleep or put your life on the line or discount any of the other bullshit that’s happening in our world but if you’re in a position to do so, reaching out to Marin a pretty easy action step to take.
