Do a google (image) search for “weinmann aero delta brake”.

For those playing at home, these are the cranks/parts that are bonded together with epoxy rather than hollow forged: Dura Ace FC-9000 and FC-R9100 (both DS and NDS), and Ultegra FC-6800 and FC-R8000 (only the driveside crank).

The XTR M9000 NDS and M91xx DS/NDS are also epoxied rather than forged, but I haven’t seen any photos of them failing. On the other hand, not many riders bought the extra-narrow M9000 cranks (there are way more of the M9020 variant in the field, and those had both of the crank arms forged), and the 12-speed M91xx cranks haven’t been around for as long.

From the photos of the new 12-speed road parts, it looks like the Dura Ace FC-R9200 and Ultegra FC-R8100 are definitely still epoxied together on the driveside crank, but they may have reverted to forged on the NDS crank of the R9200.

When Suntour made their (cantilever) version, they were worried that the front ones would be too powerful so they only made rears. The thing is if you mount a rear Suntour SE on the front, the force is in the wrong direction and the brake de-energizes.

Pedersen made both fronts and rears.

Scotty just running into the SunTour engineering room screaming that they’re giving the front cantis too much power, cap’n

Mine are definitely creaking
Approx 10k kms

right that’s what it was. in theory you could lock up a front pretty good and have a hard time unlocking with without crashing. but my dad never killed me so shrug

hey remind me, you’re the forum that loves it when nominally fun, loosely structured riding formats get turned into sponsored racing series, right?

Oh not speaking personally here, I think gravel is dumb because it’s like road biking but not road biking.

It’s just interesting to watch the mainstreaming happen live. The whole attempt at commercializing fixed gear street racing didn’t really get that far, gravel seems like it has real legs

I can’t speak for others, but I like gravel because I like road bikes but I don’t like cars and cars don’t like gravel. I got a cross bike before gravel bikes were a thing but it handled like a dump truck and then they went and paved all my favorite dirt roads anyway so then I started riding mountain bikes to get away from cars. Then I changed continents and I’m back to road bikes on the road because it’s totally different here.

I think there was a fast bikes with fat tires thread years before gravel bikes were born

:joy::sob:

yeah that thread has got to be a decade old

judge fred’s elephant was the inspiration for some of this decade’s big bike trends. i seem to recall a fair bit of “allroad “ bikes at the 2012 nahbs in sacramento. it wasn’t clear what a lot of them were for- they were still borrowing heavily from cx at that point, or trying to shoehorn mtb parts onto road-ish bikes.
it’s been a weird decade

I was thinking this when I jumped on my 70’s Peugeot this morning to commute. I nearly dropped it on the first right-hander. Geometry has come a long way !

Exactly my experience with cross bikes
