I think I’m way better than the average redditor and I doubt I could tell a difference between a Surly and a high end steel bike spec’d the same.
I ride turds and I like it, I probably have no ability to discern a quality bike.

I bet you could—but I think the redditor angle is smugly needing to have more obscure reasoning that bucks mainstream consumerism while staying inside an “opulent” budget
I just think the majority of them are basement dwelling nerds who listen to video game soundtracks and argue about religion while not knowing anything about what happens outside
I think Reddit is way more of an annoying IT guy at work who wears Nick offerman merch kind of internet place.
Even Marino will sell you a straight-gauge 4130 frame.
That’s what I grew up riding. Once I rode a bike from a nicer tubeset, my world was opened up.
or as the kids would say “need to touch grass.”
It’s truly astonishing how many riders, despite the outdoors setting of the hobby, desperately need to touch grass.
I have been browsing reddit more lately it’s so bizarre and awful and I still can’t put my finger on why. I think a big thing is that karma system rewards people for repeatedly replying to posts with Rick and Morty quotes and the biggest idiots get their posts bumped to the top. This also leads to all the hobby/niche topics being dominated by low-knowledge normies instead of the actual weirdos you want information from. For things like local news this is all sort of whatever, but for things I enjoy like bikes and BBQ it is a total wasteland.
It is actually pretty depressing to me because google and the internet are so fucked now that reddit has turned into some shitty Library of Alexandria that holds all of the worst bits of human knowledge
But yeah I’m still scrolling it just in case
It’s like a message board but corporate.
Making me again grateful to have a user-supported forum like tarck where we don’t have ads or in-house spam even if it does end up costing me $5 a month
I do sometimes wish we could grow or diversify a little more but I think you have to be careful what you wish for
the first time I made an account here I posted a picture of me in the new person thread doing a trackstand on my bike that had an aerospoke front wheel and got heavily bullied. tbh I deserved it. I didn’t come back for like 5 years.
So maybe we just keep doing that?
I asked one of my young co workers about the phrase “touch grass.” What a wretched culture we have.
There is grass literally everywhere.
Trek used to stamp all of their bikes with “function specific design”
and I would joke about trying to design a lamp and accidentally coming up with a bicycle instead because it was a stupid slogan that makes no sense.
then these jackasses decided they could replicate the entire bike supply chain on their own with a couple of brick and mortar showrooms and a bike built out of a mag light.
Yeah and not enough people are touching it
Why do the bikes have Bluetooth encryption keys?
Not in Utah!
this is a bummer considering most of the folks who bought these bikes likely won’t be able to maintain them should electronics fail
turns out it’s hard to make money in the bike industry. who knew
too true
