Le epic reddit moment
I am typically a Surly apologist but this is all pretty funny
Also I sent them an e-mail with a very-Surly question about fork compatibility and availability and I think they never wrote me back? Something stinks
I thought the Preamble was sort of a smart move when I saw it as a modestly-but-competently spec’d entry-level steel bike but now it looks more like a waving of the white flag
What’s the consensus on all-city and their spiritual successor, wilde bikes? Just mass produced steel frames with light-ish tubing?
seems like wilde bikes did an expedited version of sklar bikes, reeling people’s interest in with handmade musa frames, then slowly putting out more affordable nonmusa frames.
$1200 Maxway framesets I guess they have nice paint tho
That’s about what Black Mountain Cycles are now too - way more than they used to be.
Wowww… I didn’t realize they cost that much now. Surlys are like $700-800 but their volume is obviously much bigger. I think I got my Black Mountain Road for like $600, but of course that’s like 8-9 years ago now
Laughs in marinobike
But actually I think with the spirit of gravel™ and so many brands making steel bikes now linetime at maxway probably costs more now
for comparison, a Fairlight Faran is just under $1100 USD right now
i’d have a hard time considering a Surly / All city / Black Mountain / whatever else.
The Classy Surly™️ velo orange Polyvalent is still under a bong. Best deal around for dirtbags atmo
I will never buy a QBP bike. Even if the all-city guys pick a super cool paint color
I thought Wilde bikes was the house brand of Rando’s favorite mommy milker creepshots shop but now I see that it’s that QBP alum’s brand collab with catfish. I have definitely noticed more of those around MPLS, but “cool dude bikes” here are still almost entirely all city.
That subreddit is a trip
Couldn’t even figure out how to take a decent picture of his hideous monstrosity
IMO being a Surly fan is like being a self identified Weezer fan as an adult
what’s with these homiez dissin my crosscheck
I cringe a little when people talk about a surly as their dream bike. There was a time in all our lives when the idea of a sturdy, well-made bike that wasn’t thrown together at the co-op or bought second-hand was a dream that was out of our price range, but once that’s no longer true, you’re allowed to move on.
It’s even funnier when people act like a surly is a more worthy object of desire than a S-Works.

this post. this one right here. tarcklebee
I mean the average normal person would not be able to tell the difference between a Surly and a $10k super bike. They’re both just “bike.” Surely we’ve all had friends and family show us their sears bike boom bike from 1971 and ask us “is this a good bike?”
And even the average “bike enthusiast” isn’t much more erudite. Especially in a place like Reddit.
For most people a $1,000 surly represents an almost unimaginable opulence for a bike

If its on sight alone no-- but have them pick up an S-Works Aethos vs a Midnight Special they can guess which costs more.
