I’m gatekeeping speicalized for all the downtrodden service industry employees

I’m so tired of this, and I’m even guilty of it.

Agree to disagree on the first point - XTR on a townie is a great flex. Agree about octalink though - why not just use the modern XTR cranks? Octa-era-XTR is all the shitty parts of old components (not cheap, proprietary chainring, bunk-assed deadend bottom bracket) without any of the good parts about old components (cheap, square taper, stylish). Lack of lights is a blunder as well. Okay this bike can be sent to the dungeon with the rest.

The Tomii’s are cool, but the choice of tires and brakes make them look cheap or something. IDK I can’t quite put a finger on it. Just kind of uncanny valley but not in a way I appreciate.

Same here.

I have to give props to the bike with the ‘enamel camping mug’ paint job. That kind of finish is clever and funny, and ended up looking really good. An intentionally rim-braked bike is a bit unfortunate in this day and age, but I love the rest of it.

It’s those goddamn tires for me. That XTR crank and chainring setup is damn good looking but those stupid ass gray tires are the worst.

Basically just a $$$ flex, not any better or better looking than the XT stuff and it’s a Riv so we’re not gram counting here. Extra-annoyed at the HP-M900 headset which is a loose-ball headset worse in pretty much every way than the much-more-readily-available HP-7410. But muh XTR…!

(The only reason someone should ever covet that headset is if they’re doing a 100% M900 build, which this ain’t. But while on that topic: points off for Paul brakes instead of leaning into the XTR build and using some luscious M900 cantis.)

All those bikes suck. God I hate vintage MTB people almost as much as I hate vintage BMX people.

I drove that route by car. There was a Slovenian national road rider that I kept leapfrogging when we would stop and look around.

Looks like a cool thing to ride up - 2.6 is way overbuilt for that road. At max maybe 48s? Would be fine?

atmo that list is designed to troll us. the youths ride those shitty bikes to troll us.

I rode both when they were modern. Now, I can’t decide if it’s a “too loud or too old” moment for me. Newer bikes ride so much better.

I got kinda Nutmeg pulled on a lot of this stuff this year, and it’s nice to hear y’all talking sense.

Is there such a thing as a good drop bar 29er tho?

Depends what you want to do with it, and how tall you are.

Monster cross was always kind of silly. I guess I like this counterculture variety of monster cross better than the late aughts version.

retroshift wasn’t enough

so lets have the left unusable shifter actuate an external dropper post with a Tune Speedneedle saddle

Some days I wish I was a little bit taller but 6’1

i love my dropper lever to be essentially unusable from the drops
