French riders: suck at road, paradoxically untouchable in downhill.

Oh shit. That must have been southern cross, right? I can’t think of another race where they would have had us pin on the front like that. I was so unprepared. Walked several climbs and pedaled with a single leg for the last 10-15 miles. Bike was geared with a 36t ring and a 11-28 cassette. And, yes, ergos with tilted up brake levers was exactly how cross folks were running things at the time.

New bike, the same as my old bike only flat mount & single speed. This year I will learn to hop the barriers!
I did the logos myself and while I’m not 100% satisfied with the way it turned out I’m gonna try and do more of a drip all over parts of the bike. Sorta a zebra print to match my early 2000s Allez.

Looks good. You had the V4 (or V3?) previously, right? Any noticeable differences in ride feel or handling?

My original Squidcross is a V4. (Still have that one setup like you saw it at Homegrown)
This V5 feels the same as the V4 rode when I had the Spork installed. Spork is the same A-C and 2mm less offset (45 vs 47mm). That and the EBB is in a different spot so that feels a little different, but in a way that’s hard to not princess-and-the-pea about.

Overall the TRP hoods are a more tangible difference in fit and feel. I still need to dial in the fit. I went with an 8cm stem but I think that a 9cm will be better. I normally run a 0º 10cm on the V4. These TRP brakes feel nice. Bunny hopping on them is solid. Dragging chainring over downed logs feels much more locked in with four fingers on the hoods.

[edit:] The Squids are very good gravel & CX bikes but for singletrack my Salsa Journeyer is much better. It’s 2" tires, 1º slacker HTA, and dropper add a lot.
