Robin Thurston is a terrorist.
It’s always interesting to me when Wes Siler pops up
I was very much into motorcycles when he launched the Hell For Leather website he mentions in that article. At the time I thought it was pretty cringey/edgy but it was definitely influential. Kinda like more blustery Radavist for motorcycles in hindsight.
So I always want to laugh at the guy like we tend to do with Prolly here but I did scan of the above article and it all tracks to me! So there you go, not sure what my point is lol
Siler’s writing seems closer to Grant in my mind…he’s generally in the right ballpark, but takes the most annoying/edge lord path to get there. His pivot from LA moto jock to rugged Montana outdoorsman was def a proto Prolly move, though.
But to reminisce for a minute, credit to him for what they were doing with Hell for Leather. Well designed long form content and paid digital subscriptions when everything else in the moto space was either advertorials in the print rags or 30 post advrider ride report threads written in dry prose by water treatment plant technicians on holiday. They were one of the first content subscriptions I remember paying for bitd:
All this to say, he comes to the right conclusion, despite sticking himself into the middle of it. This is mostly a product of hollowed out newsrooms where tenured folks get pushed out and replaced with a fresh crop of eager youngins who get driven to produce as much as possible without adequate support or resources to make good stuff. Eat the rich, death to private equity, etc, etc.
I read his post about why he was let go from Outside. I definitely see this comparison.
Wanted to go look at some stuff from last decade about one of their bikes and encountered this. It’s funny, can think of reasons why but still.
Had not visited BikeRadar in a while.
Holy shit, all the headlines are formatted “Product is great, BUT this other thing!”
A few here and there you could excuse, but it is all of them.
i want to believe that the gravel bikes review is the full review. four clickbait articles and one one-sentence review 3.5 stars.
headline tells you something, but makes you click anyway
designed not for homepage viewing but sharing on the socials/Google search
Guys, I understand the purpose of it. Just seeing it so blatantly is sad. Also, as Pears said, they seem to cover everything I need to know without clicking to read it.
cried in the tub and ate some pot.
I noticed that last night ! It must be a new “thing”.
internet is cooked
Hey at least they know how to use a comma. So many (most?) clickbait headlines and ads these days use a comma splice. I don’t really understand it—their credibility is instantly reduced.
What size tires for riding with AI-induced psychosis?
ironic AI use, brilliant!
Hello Tarcksters. I am doing an AMA on Jan 16th on the Xbiking subreddit. Please begin preparing your obscure questions I will attempt to answer.
