How long ago did you test ride? The newest version of their motors have been redesigned to have zero drag when pedaling.
Just like surly makes $1500 $900 bikes, they make 5 bong ebikes.
Once you add the word ‘cargo’ to bike you can start charging from 3 bongs onwards

Late last spring, test rode a Benno Boost E, some little wheeled Tern thing, and an Orbea e-Katu. All of them were super fun with whatever level of assist and super duper turdly with it off.
Maybe the Shimano system rides better when turned off. I haven’t ridden one of those.
It’s like Grant and PVD made a babby.
