How do you parlay that first 31.8 clamp into a decaleur that’ll fit an Ortlieb bag system? I’m having a hard time imagining this.

I’ll add:

16mm is the biggest diameter tubing that an Ortlieb pannier clamp will fit on, so I figured it was the best choice.

Then I figure it’ll fit easily into this setup, replacing the 22mm tube with some shimming. The clamps themselves look small enough that I hope they don’t interfere with the Ortlieb system.

Remove the gopro sandwich part (two bolts) (or if it works for the height you need, bolt it to the tube/rod somehow and use it)
Attach a tube/rod of your preferred ortlieb clamp diameter (10-12mm alu tube would be cheap and easy) to the extension of the clamp by either making a bracket, drilling through and bolting on to existing tapped holes or make more…
Adjust height of tube attachment on extension together with angle of clamp for offset from bar, settle on final attachment point on clamp and pannier rail attachment on bag.

Ok, that part where you attach the tube/rod to the clamp is where I don’t see a solution easy enough for my lazy self. What do you think of my idea?

Ok, except

  • giant shim (22-16 = 3mm thick), not insurmountable.
  • what’s the wear resistance of the carbon tube to the pannier hooks vibrating around on it, my tubus has no powercoat left where the hooks go.
  • limited adjustment as rotating the clamp on your bars covers both height and offset at the same time as it describes an arc. If that doesn’t coincide with the available rail area on the bag and the required offset from the bars, you’re out of luck.

Will the ortlieb hooks really fit over 16mm diameter tube? That’s fucking huge, like 5/8" . Good to know.

One way to attach a piece of rod/rail to something else is with the huge daruma eyebolts used on some racks.

Otherwise, set your googles to “rod clamp” there seems to be a lot in the photography/videography world. Like this little babby:

I’ve been searching for a little clampy-thing that I can use on existing rack tubing to create a dyno light mount. The trick is I need to insert in the middle of a tube run, not slip over the end. Not sure what I’m going to use, but ERMAGHERD so many clampy things:

i love this thread already

thanks guys.

Yeah this is huge.

This all should not get buried in this thread. Please repost some of this into a thread more easily found at a later date. I’m not front baggin right now, but see the possibility in the future.

Or alternately, just forget all this kuldgy decaileur fuckery and put the ortlieb clips on the bottom of the bag like I did! I’ve never tried it on a D rack but it works 100% perfect on my HC rack.

^ I saw a dude on the light rail who had done exactly that and I was super impressed.

This thread is giving me all of it.

That’s cool, but it’s nice to have the top of the bag secured, especially if it’s heavily loaded on rough stuff.

This is relevant to my interests! Thanks.

That’s pretty cool, have you posted this on Tarck before?

I think that would work really well for me on the front edge of the rack because on the rough stuff my Ozette pivots about the Berthoud Decaleur and the front end lifts enough to open the velcro.

Jimmy gave me a cool rubber pencil holder that I also want to sew or rivet on but worried it doesn’t have quite enough holding power for an overloaded bag.

Ortlieb clips on bottom front of bag might give me all of it! My biggest issue with my Ocean air bag is that while Orc did a great job giving me room for my hands on the tops, the bag lists backwards (probably from wind resistance). If it were stuck at the front then that would no longer occur. Although I’d still want a zip tie on the tombstone, so maybe a decaleur would do a better job.

That is what they claim:

Those rubber pencil grips were a good idea but they do not hold enough. I tried on a coroplast box with like 5 of them on the bottom, popped off way too easy.

What has worked better for me is those little clips that go on a backpack shoulder strap and hold your hydration tube.

this is not the best link but here’s a molle hydration tube trap / hydration tube guide
