Bike Polo is the new Roller Derby

Real talk.

If everything one ever knew about bike polo came from BSNYC… they wouldn’t be missing much.

if we’re lucky enough we can get a T.I. movie about it.

Agreed. It was fun a couple of times, didn’t get a chance to play again for a bit, went out once more, realized it was a “scene” type deal, went home. I wasn’t any good at it, so that kind of played a bit part as well.

fuck yall stealin mah words

Yup. I love both.

I’ve played bike polo and I’ve attended roller derby bouts. I’m just calling it how I see it.

Whoever the male equivalent to Drew Barrymore is, he’s working on a bike polo script right now. It’ll star Jake Gyllenhaal and the Jonas Brothers and come out like four years after the trend peaks.

I think this is a little fair to people who’ve been playing a long time… I guess hard to say… I see a lot of people who play on fixed gears who look very hip in photos on the internet, but in portland everyone plays on mountain bikes and lots of people who play are in their 30s. theirs some pretty normal looking, very unhip dudes who play polo here who are really into it.

The SF game is mainly this type of crew as well.

Its coming up to a year since I started playing polo.
I think at the start it was more of a “scene” thing, but as time went by, people who played for the wrong reasons stopped playing.
Those who liked it for “the love of the game” continued to play.

Now its at a point where we all have our own polo bikes… most which are pieces of junk…dont like breaking expensive stuff
Our skill levels are far higher than what we started with, and we’re pretty competitive, always a shit load of fun to play.

whenever a newbie comes along I feel kinda bad for them, it takes a while to pick up the speed of the game.

^ always gets me pumped for polo…

We have finally been getting players in Edmonton to come out, it was like puling teeth at first. We have two great hockey courts, one is lit for night games. Thursday polo is the start of my weekend. Since most of us are really still new we are not great players, but when someone new comes we take it easy on them the first night and let them get some goals. If they come back again they normally are hooked and then we stop taking it easy.

roller derby is one of the worst things i can think of.

so is bike polo

Its really fun, but I’m not very competitive at all so I only like playin with friends. Soon as someone gets crazy about it I bail. The one 30yo dude that plays sometimes is such a dick that I haven’t played months now

We had a group that played here 3-4 years ago. We had a bunch of kids bikes and old MTBs that weren’t good for anything else. The only people who came out were old school bike punks. One or two hipster-ish kids tried riding their track bikes but gave up after they saw how easily they would be damaged during a game. Then everyone left in the summer of 2007. When I came back from Thailand I saw a posting for regular polo games, saying that Atlanta finally had a polo crew. I wish the old crew was still around to play with.

HAHAH shirtless french dude in video is my boy jean boule. dude is outta control hilarious and a complete pig.

The court we play on in DC is where the roller derby girls used to practice.

Cool. I’ve been looking for an excuse to wear fishnet tights and give myself a “clever” nickname.

Last (and really, only) time I played was once or twice in college, circa '92. Me and a couple of friends riding thrift store bikes around a parking lot, trying to hit a tennis ball with croquet mallets. The parking lot featured a loading dock with a ramp up to it, which definitely added to the fun. Not to mention a bunch of flat spots in my rims

Local polo players know me only as Ziggy Stardust.
