BMX/Awesome thread

riding with my kid and bunny hopping is what i did yesterday. today i watched a bunch of learn how to manual videos so that’s my next goal. i will have to pay attention to these “skate parks” because until basically today i really never had any reason to notice them.

Rochester sucks for skateparks. My best friend is the executive director of the non profit that has been trying for years to build one. Best bet is the one in Webster, but it sucks.

i imagine one of the reasons it sucks is because 6 months a year an outdoor skate park would be basically unusable. kind of like how we don’t really have any mini golf either. but somehow big golf is on fire here. seems like everyone over 40 that i know plays golf.

Been thinking about trying some racing again since I’m sort of feeling fit-ish, and there’s a nice new track close to town. Anyone else done some old man racing? Not sure how stacked the 36-40 class is here, but I imagine I’d be in the back even in Novice.

Been thinking about doing the same actually. Going to be around a track for the next several weeks.

Austin is a huge BMX scene, so there’s probably a ton of old shredders and raddads.

Call your local track and see what’s up. They are usually great about getting new people into it. I know you’ll need long sleeves and pants.

Yeah that’s what I’m expecting. Tons of Old Austin dudes still ripping at the skatepark, so I imagine a lot of the same dudes from the old dumpy track will still be racing. I already talked to the folks at the track about clinics, they runs them every Saturday which is perfect for me.

I need new tires. The Kink shit on this Gap XL are heavy as fuck and don’t grip for shit. 20" Powerblocks? Mostly a mix of pump track and park riding, too hot to bother with racing for a few more months and I don’t ride street.

2.1" S-Spec Powerblocks are hella light and suit pump track/park riding just fine.

So much rad riding comes from Spain. No pegs, cassette, goin fast, wall rides, tire slides, hell yeah.

it is crazy how influential some Spanish riders have been. Ruben, Layos especially. I think they popped up before Barcelona became a huge skate/bmx destination

also I wanna get my bmx bike back runnin again. just needs a rear wheel. looks like a free coaster is outta the budget tho. maybe I should just rebuild/replace my khe geisha…

Ruben’s Malaga park really started to breed that style of rider, too. Fast and high. Simple and stylish. My favorite type of riding to watch.

That bump to tire slide at :27 is SO good!

Good thing about those KHE coasters is that the parts are ubiquitous. Almost every modern coaster still uses their internals…for better or worse.

Seems the best modern coasters are the Odyssey Clutch (refer to their YT videos explaining their superior design), the Eclat Cortex (uses a coil spring & O-ring for full clutch contact on the axle unlike the metal ball like every other KHE clone), and the Profile Z-Coaster (pawl-based coaster - can use pedal pressure with this hub when it is in ‘cassette-mode’, $$$ tho).

i am getting less bad at manuals. i’m still pretty bad at it. the problem is i never ride in sneakers so i’m afraid to loop out and destroy my toes.

I still suck at manuals. I’d be happy to roll 5 feet.
I’m getting there though
Slowly

i am up to like 12 feet! after about 10 feet i get so nervous i’m going to loop out that i end up tensing up and it messes me all up.

Just pretend that there is a tiny stool just aft of your rear tire and sit on it.

Ive always found it way easier to lock into manuals if I hop into them, like up onto a curb or even on flat ground. and bikes with short rear ends and talk bars are def not as easy to keep the front end up & steady, way more apt to loop out, imo

how tall are “tall” bars? i have no idea how these things are measured. i thought i was fluent in bikes until i got this bmx thing. now i feel like a mandarin speaker who just walked into hong kong and can’t figure out why everything sounds weird.

Bars are a lot taller than they used to be. Mine are 9".

Couple that with 13.75 CS and it’s not the easiest bike to manual, but it flies over dirt and pumptracks
