I did some analysis on 1st and 10 place finishes over the years in the TDV. A mid pack buddy of mine from here finished 10th in 19 days on a reasonably fast year, 2017. Brian Lucido won in 14:22 that year. This year 19 days gets you 30 th place. This year 10th place is 16:16. The standard sure has increased.

I reckon Joe Nations Tour Divide vid is pretty good. Can’t imagine doing that much social media and still coming 3rd. His part 2 is out now too. Not watched 2 yet. He made some pretty novice mistakes at the start which he didn’t handle well.

I guess this is the first time weve seen a pro rider with any kind of bikepacking background doing the TD. Wont be ratified cos film crew, and hes going for the sleep long and ride hard rather than the sleep deprivation approach. Apparently 12 hours in every 48 sleeping.

Not sure how he maintained that position for 12 days. Probably got no more feeling in his hand’s.

Is this one of those events where SSing can be seen as an advantage ? I think I heard that one year in the Highland trail 500 a good percentage of the top 10 were SSing.

I’m not too familiar with the AZT, but I imagine the playing field gets leveled a bit with any route that doesn’t have long flat sections. I believe the AZT is primarily singletrack with some rolling climbs, which is for me the sort of stuff i really enjoy singlespeeding on. i’d imagine a somewhat lighter singlespeed setup would also be a bit nicer for the hike across the grand canyon

They just made the 2024 Tour Te Waipounamu trackers live. Its gonna be super competitive again this year. Unfortunately Martin Strelka is out but 1st and 3rd place getters from previous Tour Divides are present with Aussie Lewis Ciddor, and Kiwis Joe Nation and Steve Halligan. Not that it’s got anything in common with the TD anyway. There are heaps of other really capable people. Rufus with the weird bike will be there. Check out his kit in this piece on SUFUR Prototype Bike Check (Video) - BIKEPACKING.com . Real tidy.

The women’s field will be super competitive with Anja Mcdonald, Emma Bateup, Emma Flukes (Tassie gift orgtaniser) Karen Lesur and Eszter Horanyi, partner of Topofusion’s Scott Morris, the guy that invented spot-trackers as we know them. Lots of locals from Wellington (where I live) doing it. It starts tomorrow (saturday in NZ).
