Yeah, he’s started a bit conservatively. The bit they are doing now is a real mind fukk. Its Beautiful hiking track, but there is a fallen tree over the track every 100 metres, so its very on and off again. Some people reckon this is a good reason bring a dropper post. The leaders have already passed the place I slept on day 2! Reckon they will probably try to cross the Dampier range today. That was about 8 hours of hikeabike for me. Broke me totally. Rufus and Joe are just crossing the River. I was too chicken shit to cross it so pulled my bike to bits to cross this evil fukking swing bridge. So nasty. This dot watching is damn cool when you know exactly where these guys are and what they are feeling!

Been hard-core dotwatching this year. Joe Nation and Rufus are tearing a hole in it. Joe’s time over the Dampier Range was insane. I measured 3 hours of bike carrying. It took me 7 hours in 2021. The amount of sleep these people are not doing is mental. Not sure how they are not overcome with hallucinations. Check out some of their rigs. Probably typified at the pointy end by no tents, bivvys only, no cooking. No sleeping bags, puffers and pants only.

Standings at the moment with most of the hikeabike out of the way for the front two at least.

Yeah. Would be interesting to know if anyone is on shit. I’m tired enough being a dot watcher.

I texted Steve yesterday as he lay in his hospital bed. Apparently he lay on the ground for an hour before activating the SOS on his tracker. 3 hours later he was in hospital but his food had only just arrived. I can magine how hungry he must have been. They are operating today. Maybe a plate, the break is high up the bone.

Ooh ooh !

Feck. Joe Nation is nailing the #effluencer thing. How you smash everyone and video it at the same time. 28 mins but I reccommend if thats your bag.

Wow. Local Welly dude (Scouser) Martin’s videoing leaves Joe’s for dead. Don’t watch Joes !

Resurrecting this thread for a DQ. Lael is riding Jenny Graham’s around the world route in an attempt to beat the record. Cool as hell. Looking at the routes, though, it appears that Lael omits an entire continent (Asia) and takes drastically different paths through North America and Europe. In spite of this, it looks as though the distance is the same (~18,000 miles). That said, the logistical challenges of sticking to English-speaking/English-speaking adjacent countries are very different than traversing all of Asia. Anyone know what’s up with how the route can be so different but the ‘record’ can be the same? Doesn’t diminish anything from the effort atmo, but its interesting to me that it could be considered the same ride. I know with things like RAAM and the Divide there are minor route changes year to year, but this seems a lot more significant than that.

Jenny Graham’s route:

Lael’s:

This all ignores, of course, that both routes don’t enter Africa at all. Also, Antarctica would be pretty not feasible.

I dont understand that at all. Thats the entire course for Lael ?

can’t get safely thru russia, china may not have been receptive to issuing a visa

the world was a different place in 2018, might be about being assured to make it home alive

similar distance, similar spirit

Again, not saying its not in the spirit of the event or that one effort is easier than the other, but it is interesting that the coverage of Lael’s attempt is specifically pointing towards Jenny’s record, despite the routes being so drastically different.

according to bicycle, (-Lael Wilcox Aims to Set Record on 18,000-Mile Cycling Journey Around the World)

She’s going for the official women’s World Record for Fastest Circumnavigation of the World by Bicycle in the Guinness Book of World Records, which currently stands at just over 124 days. It was set in 2018 by Jenny Graham after being set originally in 2012 by ultra-endurance racer Juliana Buhring.

so did Jenny go do Juliana’s route? Lael can’t go do Jenny’s exact route as it stands. So it would seem she’s aiming to do 18k miles. Or perhaps whatever Guinness defines as “official women’s World Record for Fastest Circumnavigation of the World by Bicycle”

Guinness page doesn’t lay down hard parameters

per wiki’s pedia

The Guinness World Record (GWR) for fastest circumnavigation of the globe by bicycle is awarded for completing a continuous journey around the globe by bicycle and other means, consisting of a minimum 29,000 km (18,000 miles) in total distance cycled.

go ride 18k miles across earth and you too can be a circumnavigator
