Does this redactavist commenter have it straight?
“Racing is a game of ego and assholes, I just don’t see the outright bigotry on his part and if that is the issue then Salsa should step up and make it public.”

That’s a remarkably observant comment.
The best thing I’ve ever read on prolly:
Hey what a shock the irrelevant AARP dinosaurs over at Paceline Forums think PC culture has run amok.
Word is the hard press to terminate Petervary’s contract didn’t start until after Lael finished and probably wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t scratched.
Always relevant
He definitely hates her, whether that’s misogyny or not who knows - sports is full of angry rivalries. What’s more lolful to me about the whole thing is how much of a cheater Petervary is - there’s an open letter from 2015 by another race organizer detailing how many times he’s blatantly disregarded the rules of various distance races - which when you think about it, isn’t all that surprising, sometimes people who are obsessed with how others may be cheating are obsessed because they’re cheating too.
Let’s be real, this wouldn’t be happening if she wasn’t a woman. And in fact, it didnt happen to the other competitor that also had a film crew. It couldn’t be any more clear what the reasoning is.
This.
It’s also pretty interestingunsurprising how many people are rabidly arguing the contrary.
The year that rookie Ollie Whalley won it, he got bagged by JP for riding most of the way with another guy, Craig Stappy? So its nothing new from his corner.
What I don’t understand is why no one cared before when that Ride The Divide movie was made. In what manner is this different?
I definitely agree that misogyny is part (some or most) of this guy’s reaction to Wilcox, but I think it’s better to focus on what a shitty cheater he is because it’s more cut and dry, and it’ll ruin his reputation more thoroughly than being called a misogynist (because lots of people dont’ give a shit about women or women in sports, so being labeled a misogynist isn’t really all that harmful in the long run - and that’s a whole separate convo).
It’s also verifiable, whereas a charge of misogyny is easy to deny with whatever spurious defense you can muster
But it was still the misogyny that brought the cheating back to life, so it all works out in the end. Plus, she is still popular and inspirational, while a dozen people would be able to tell you who he is if they have ever heard of Salsa.
TL;DR he’s a shitbag who’s the last person who should be ranting and raving about minutia in the rules.
As someone who followed the whole Facebook catastrophe in real time, I didn’t experience any actual outright mysogyny from him, but there was for sure a ton of “I’m the Old Guy and I’m the only person qualified to have an opinion and here’s how I think it Should Be” which sucks
And I’m willing to be that there was a fair amount of actual shittiness in folks’ DMs, if not from him directly then from people who thought they were acting on his behalf
Really, this is the crux of the issue. What it comes down to is that the goalposts only kept moving because she’s a woman.
Hot take
and she felt like she had to be accomodating beeeecauuussseee…
Yea, if a female athlete shows any aggression then people are generally quick to start framing her as petulant/strident/arrogant/bitchy etc.
Kind of a shitty rock/hardplace deal - although in this case ignoring him worked out (she’ll still get blamed for his behavior though, with lots of people whining about how unfair it was for him to lose a sponsorship because of her)
my wife has recently gotten me to stop saying “bossy” and to substitute different words.
because when have you ever called a man bossy?
anyone who whines about this is an asshat who doesn’t deserve a millisecond of our attention, now or in the future.
dude made his bed, now he has to sleep in it.
