Theres such a profound difference between ephemeral speech uttered when no recording devices are running, and publicly archived everything accessible to the best search algorithms we have now and in the future. It’s scary.
The concept of consent for photos, activities, etc was completely foreign to my parents. I think generationally that had something to do with why it’s a big deal now.
To play the other side for a minute: I think it’s important to still document your child’s development and young life. I’m sure if given an option as a young child I would have always said no to a photo but I’m thankful for them later in life (in private, physical photo albums.)
I’m not sure what the looks like today… hard drives with the photos? Cloud storage?
Same could be true for pictures. My folks have a picture of me from behind standing in front of the Christmas tree going full Donald Duck with a shirt on but nothing else. I was probably 4. And it doesn’t bug me because it’s in an album somewhere that only gets seen by specific people when my parents want them to see it. If it had been posted on FB and was randomly being brought back up when someone randomly found it and liked it, I’d be pissed I think.
oof
either of these are fine (assuming the cloud storage method is some NAS or other server space that you expressly own physically, or at the very least that you have sole ownership of all content uploaded to it in the user agreement)
but using a giant corporation with a shady EULA as your cloud storage for photos of someone who did not consent to their likeness being owned by the corporation and used in ways that the corporation is using them now, and is only going to get more nefarious with in 20 years when the person is of age to give consent? not so great
as a general rule I don’t upload to my social media accounts any photos of people who do not themselves have accounts on the social media platform without their express prior permission

Looks cooked
Epic. Still some precipitation down Tassie then, good to know.
Oh that route looks so pretty.
The divide is really phenomenal, Lael loves it for a reason. It’s pretty unique in the combination of factors: quality of riding, non-technical terrain, lack of traffic, backcountry setting, but resupply every couple days. I only got to ride like 600 miles of it but it was so fun and beautiful that I would gladly go do just that section again (although I’d def rather finish the whole thing first). Plus there are always reroutes that take you on roads or trails of equal quality if anything is closed or you wanna cut out particularly hard sections (koko claims pass north from Fernie comes to mind).
If you’re a bike person and like dirt road riding, you should try and make at least a section trip of it happen in your lifetime- it’s really that good
Thanks, that’s the kind of review I’ve not seen and does make me want to go ride some of it.
Tarck the divide?
I really really hope that film finally puts the nail in the coffin and shuts up all the Lael-haters, J.P, Mathew Lee and shit show shenanigans of the T(t)D-facebook group.
But a pretty big part of me doubts it coz patriarchy, double standards and fragile white men ego’s.
Agreed @viggen. I love how down to earth Lael seems. I’ve ridden 130 miles of the divide (which is nothing) but it’s gorgeous and she’s right - it’s not technical but you do have to love climbing.
Whenever I drive to/from sup’s parents place in Montana, I stop in Ovando and it’s the cutest little tiny town.
I really liked that film. Makes we want to ride my bike again
I don’t like the assholes on Facebook, they can go fuck themselves. Lael is cooler than they are, is nicer than them, and is way fuckin better at riding bikes than they are
I didn’t follow any of the drama or watch the movie, but I can say definitively that every single dork who complained about Lael on Faceboomer is a gormless loser. That some of them lost their endorsements fills my putrid heart with joy
On that note I put together a loop of the Montana section of the divide and the northernmost segment of the new Wild West route that looks stupidly fun, hoping to run it next summer. It’s just long, you’d want a couple weeks to ride the whole thing prob GDMBR/WWR Whitefish Loop · Ride with GPS
This video is great but it just makes me angry about the drama all over again.
My friend Nico raced and our friend was driving up to Montana for a wedding and trying to drive mostly dirt roads. They met up and hung out for like 20 minutes. Was Nico dq’d because he saw not only his friend but the guy who he actually normally races as a duo with? No, of course not. He posted a photo on instagram and everything.
At 28min a guy passes a group of his friends on the side of the road ringing cowbells and holding signs.
The guy at the 30min mark meets up with his wife and daughter and is clearly getting a lot out of seeing his family.
Everyone is on their phones and updating their blogs, speaking with family, friends, and fans. Listening to their favorite albums to get them up climbs and podcasts to break the lonlieness
But NOOOOOO, Lael can’t use a phone and when the crew is doing a roadside shoot Rue has to go hide behind a fucking tree. All because Lael dares to be a woman.
It’s fucking despicable and the organizers should seriously consider handing off the reins.
Watched it last weekend and noticed a lot of the same. So much BS she had to put up with, seems like so many men are threatened by a strong woman.
