I forget where I read that if something is left on the road with a free sign, people are less likely to take it. Putting a sign with a dollar amount assigned it value, making people more likely to take it. The author of the axiom tried several amounts, with $50 being the amount most likely to make people want to āstealā it.

Iāve heard this theory and it sounds plausible but doesnāt match with my recent experienceāi had a set of snow tires on rims that donāt fit my new car, few years old but decent tread. Had two nibbles in a month at $100 but no buyer and half a dozen inquiries in a few hours when I dropped the price to free.
I guess if the goal is tricking someone into stealing it thatās a bit different
