Crapbrapping or Pukebacking or Poopbarning

I have the same issue. I’m thinking of making a simple bag for poles out of some durable fabric that straps to the underside of my downtube.

Shouldn’t be a problem for too long though because I’ve got one of those six moon designs scout tents on the way.

You can order custom tent poles with more breaks in them than usual. They aren’t insanely expensive and would probably be similar to a custom bag.

You can also just buy the pole segments and cut them to the length you want. They sell all the little pieces to DIY it.

The reason I’ll never use a hammock is bears/mtn lions/xenomorphs - the hammock is like a candy wrapper and you’re the candy…dangling out in space for any large predator to chomp on your butt. I realize this is an irrational fear, but since its irrational the meta-thinking doesn’t much help.

Any of y’all using camping quilts? They’re getting a lotta buzz and I’m intrigued - but I’m usually too cold and wonder if they’d be warm enough.

Also interested in hearing about quilts for non-hammock use.

I use an enlightened equipment quilt for both hammock and tent sleeping. It’s great, but the lowest temps I’ve done with it are maybe like 20deg f or so. I live in Arizona so not a lot of cold camping opportunities, and it’s loads lighter, more versatile, and warmer than the sleeping bag I had prior.

I just bought a UGQ but I’m afraid it won’t be here until after my next trip. I sleep hot and have very little interest in much colder camping so I went for a 30 deg model. Hadda go custom for the extra length. Cant wait to try it out.

Quilts rule. The ultimate in thermal regulation.

Jesus Christ bike packing and bike camping are the same fuckin thing. You’re going camping on a bike. I get that people want to distinguish between the two because that’s what people do, but really, same thing.

Also, meet a woman who shipped an e-bike, camping gear, a dog trailer, and her dog over from Hawaii and was bike touring from Seattle to San Diego. She had her bike plugged in at the cafe in Castle Rock and was chatting with folks who were downtown for the Cornhole tournament. #smalltownlife

It’s all about marketing. If you can convince people that they’re two different things, you might have the chance of selling them two different products.

On the flip side, it’s nice to have words that define similar but not exactly identical things. While both a traditional touring bike and a full-sus bikepacking rig take people from one camp site to another by bike, they are each totally inappropriate for the task that the other was designed for. It is nice to not have to define something fully every time you want to talk about it.

In conclusion, it isn’t the words that are the problem, it’s the people who use the words and how they use them. If they’re jerks and use the terms to be exclusive, then they sound bad. If they’re cool and they use the words to help people develop a better understanding of what they’re talking about then they sound good. Most of us are in the middle atmo.

I agree. When you ask your friend to go back packing they bring different shit than if you say you’re going camping at the state park. That said, I see plenty of more or less traditional touring rigs heading through town with some assortment of “bike packing” gear, since it’s a lighter way of loading ones crap on a bike.

Pigeonholing this with a bloody label has got to be the least interesting part of this activity. How about shut up and go do it and call it whatever the hell you like.

u r incorrect.

Some of us keep trying to tell you infidels precisely what the difference is. It is nice to have different words for different things.

It’s the same goddamn thing.

If I put a pannier on my bike and do single track, I guess I have to turn in my bike packing card? If I put a buttrocket on and do a rando ride, I won’t get my manifest stamped?

IMO it’s mostly a marketing term designed to say “hey, this is not that boring old touring thing with reflectors and sweaty unfashionable dudes, it’s new and fresh”. While of course there’s not much new and fresh about it.

IDGAF either way, I’m just pissed this thread is not called pukebacking or poopbarning. I’d even settle for pooppacking, really.

Re:hammock camping inwarmest seasons:

Get one of those outer sleeping bags and some kind of liner for in the hammock

Is backpacking the same thing as camping?

That’s how I differentiate the bike versions of each.
