Oh I definitely understand the general concept of limiting joins in finished textile pieces, and how sand can fuck up zippers. I’m just pondering the “or may imagine” part of your above post. It might be a legit problem that I’ve just lucked out on not experiencing, or it might be the adventure cycling equivalent of Cat 5 crit dudes NEEDING their 404 Firecrests for the additional watts savings.

But seriously, for example, Porcelain Rocket will not warranty zipper failures, it’s considered “wear and tear”.
That could be indicative of a bunch of things, but it seems like either they should step up their sewing game or their customers should stop trying to pack the kitchen sink.

No, they only make rolltop framebags now, and their customers can overstuff to their hearts’ desire.
well, more power to them. I’m pretty happy with my Tangle, the zipper seems extremely sturdy, but who knows.
This has gotten me thinking about a strap and buckle setup for my cargo bike’s rain canopy - the zipper on it was pretty garbage, and I care less about it being airtight than just providing enough coverage to keep my kid dry. My current Velcro closure isn’t quite cutting it.
Revelate just updated all their zippers to a wetsuit zipper with a stretch panel…

Also note that some zippers can limit the length of the object you are trying to insert since they don’t go all the way to the edge of the bag. Primarily most standard tent poles. I had a half frame bag that had a zipper was juuuuust wide enough to fit my tent poles and I felt nervous spreading the opening to barely clear the zipper. If I still was rolling with that setup I could see the zipper eventually failing.

From the perspective of someone that makes bag I can tell you that zippers are crazy expensive and a pain in the ass to work with. I think a much more elegant solution is the roll top but I would attempt to use different hardware than that pictured above.

I’ve built various rolltop and zippered frame bags and I liked the zippered bag the most. I don’t see enough camping days or gritty conditions to hit the zipper’s lifetime. But I’ve never wanted to get anything out of the bag while riding either. I just prefer that there’s no buckles sticking out around the bag.
That bag also has a long external tent pole sleeve so I don’t have to worry about fitting those inside the bag.
If only there was a way to carry more stuff in a sort of “bread basket” arrangement
