Cross talk. Talk Amongst Yourselves.

badass

Looks like we are going back to park that charged by the hour…but at a lower rate. Still seems ridic compared to what we pay for the park that CrossVegas was at, but significantly cheaper than what we have paid in the past.

Also, first time on the new tubs last night. HOLY HELL. I gotta play with pressure, but at 24psi, they squirmed just a little too much on corners. Such nice, many smooth. Also, new pads BITE. Gotta get used to those.

What tires and how much do you weigh? 24psi seems real high to be squirmy, no?

FMB, so super supple. Sitting around 200lbs. They just folded a little more than I would have liked. Like +1-2psi would have probably been perfect.

For reference, I have run my Donnellys down to like 20-21psi before I felt the real squirm, but those have vulcanized casings. These are treated cotton.

Gotcha, full picture makes a lot more sense now. Loooooved the FMBs I ran when I still raced cross. So spectacularly supple. Ran mine in the mid-high teens, but I was racing at ~145-150 American weight units

sometimes you just gotta ride the squirm

rochester cross (which is now one of the four weekends in the US CX series) is here this weekend. i’m racing singlespeed. i took the derailleur and cassette off my zanconato and just electrical taped the cable to the frame. fully dirtbag.

Racing the first race of the Bay Area Prestige tomorrow. First race since my first ever race in 2012. I wasn’t even of legal drinking age back then.

Little nervous but what the hell. Its only 40 mins, and I’ve done this before.

I kind of miss the days of overly detailed race reports so I’m going to be the change I wish to see in the world.
Rochester Cross (first uscx weekend!) Day one, singlespeed field. I lined up next to Jake Wells who’s the current national champion. That was pretty funny. I heckled him about his gear choice. At least one of us was amused.
The first 20% are some decreasing radius turns through a field. It was a little slick from dew. Great fun. Then there’s a flyover which is not very elevated, which goes into barriers. At this point the pain begins. It goes:
Barriers
30 seconds of pedaling
Run up
Ride down, ten seconds of pedaling
Run up
Ride down, 30 seconds of power to get around the next tree.
Run up
60 seconds pedaling, dismount for stairs
30 seconds of pedaling
Giant run up
60 seconds pedaling, run up

It’s absurd. One of the best courses I’ve ever done. Actual real hard cross course.
I crashed once in a very stupid way on lap one. My lap times were super consistent. My placing sucked and I don’t care. Lots of people liked my pink socks.

The worst part was the officials I guess decided not to bother with lap cards? The fuck? So I had to listen to the announcer to know what was left.

The best part was not getting lapped by Jake Wells. Although I’m certain he wasn’t going hard because he’s racing again this afternoon.

New race day schedule has me racing at 9:15am (cat 4 masters) and 2:50pm (single speed). This is really going to test how badly I want to do two races a day.

Woof.

In non-pandemic times this would also be a test of badly I’d want to carpool with you.

I’ve been thinking lately maybe I’m not retired from cross and just need some motivation to get my stupid shoulder and the rest of my body in better shape.

Remember that time I got pulled over for speeding in Black Diamond and then found out my freewheel froze solid when I finally got to the race?

Good times…

Maybe next spring we can start a CX hopeful recidivist club. This will be my third season without turning a pedal in anger and I think it’s changing me for the worse.

No racing for me. Had a bad stomach this morning so I lazed through the 9:15 race time, saying that I’d leave the house at noon to chill with the team, watch Marley race and do the single speed at 2:50. Played a little more with my headset and got the bearing moving freely. Then took it for a test ride and realized the front brake, though seemingly not too bad, was totally borked.

I knew it wasn’t long for the world after the last season I raced. Guess letting it sit for two years didn’t fix it. Got a new lever and caliper in the mail. Will be here on Tuesday. If the hose needs to be trimmed, I’m hoping I can find a shop who can do it before next Sunday.

Got a nice soaking today…
Jingle CX just might have some classic conditions after all.

Set our course last night. Looking good with some fun features.

do you ever feel like it’s one wrong move, somebody mentions the idea of slipping you a set of free tubulars with some cross tubs on em, and suddenly you’re back combing through bike reg and the next thing you know it you’re at the back of a C field looking ahead at people who rode the trainer to warm up already
