Cross talk. Talk Amongst Yourselves.

That looks like a hella fun course. And a fun little scene. I’m getting a little tired of having 100 people on the course at the same time. I miss GA where you pretty much knew everyone at the race.

You generally know everyone at the WI races, but I would take WI over GA in general because of inventiveness. I miss me some Slim Jim/Savannah racing tho

I miss a few of the courses back in GA. Having only raced three seasons here, I’m already a little bored of the courses. Since we have two big series that design all of the courses, they all have pretty similar features. Not like GACX where each course was designed by a different group. There was so much variation back then. The roadies loved Savannah and Jim Miller. The mtb crowd had elks and serenbe.

Just found this gem from the serenbe race we put on. Helping to design that course is one of my proudest moments. Probably best to watch it on mute.

This is from the year before I think, up at the cow pasture course.
Some cameos by great ATLXers of the past in both of these.

This was fun (well, when it was over).
I’m only a casual racer and I’ve never seen anything like these conditions. I was off the bike about 2/3s of the course. Running is my weakness so my HR was pegged and I was barely jogging at times. Got lapped in my field, but only 1 lap so I took it as a victory.

Looks epic. I’ve done mud that bad and snow, but not in the same race before. Those were my best races back in GA, but I think it’s mostly because the fast roadies would see the conditions and decide not to come out.

Ugh, running is my weakness, too, and now I’m considering taking up some level of running, just so I have some sort of not-terrible base.

At Trek CXC I lost probably a dozen places simply because I couldn’t run up the hill much faster than a trudge.

Yesterday was Battle of Waterloo, which is a great course, but it was also the day of a bandit cross race called Urban Jungle Cross, which was in a new location. (The old locale is being redeveloped into condos). Ultimately I chose the unsanctioned race, which was half the cost, half a mile away, and only ate up half the day.

It was super muddy, but not unridable. It was high watts and at least four people lost a derailleur. I managed a nice gap for second place, and when I woke up today my legs felt quite blasted.

Looking forward to doing it again.

Super fun course to ride today. Not as much fun to race cross on. It was a solid 30% singletrack. Like the “no room to pass” kind. Whatever order you went in, that’s the order you came out. This probably played a role in some of the multi-cat races as the last singletrack section empties out just a few turns before the finish and the faster folks were fighting their way through slower folks from other fields.

Other than that, a good mix of tech stuff and power. A few sections really played to ss because hammering up some of the hills was much faster than the temptation to downshift. There were also some road sections that I was able to pass geared bikes on because they saw them as recovery or shifted too high while I just spun like crazy.

Two run ups. One loose and rocky, the other was uneven stairs that got narrower and steeper as they went up. But both were followed by good recovery so you didn’t feel like you were turned inside out for half a lap.

Turkey Cross in St George this weekend. The promoter uses this park every year and always seems to out it together differently. There was a sandpit that had a barrier right before the entry and then a u-turn in the middle, a sand/dirt section along the back of a baseball field that got really loose turning from 3rd to second base (which they ended up changing to be able to ride the corner patch of grass, making it easier, for the elite race for some reason), a triple set of barriers that had different distances between them, and a sweeping u-turn that could wreck you into a set of bleachers if you weren’t paying attention.
Won the ss. Took the lead 1/2 a lap in by bunnyhopping barriers and being able to accelerate right away. I was being pretty closely followed by a former pro mtb guy (on a hardtail) who would gain on me in the gravel sections. One of which was really deep/loose gravel that you had to make 2 u-turns in and the other section that was just the right amount of fast/loose that didn’t inspire confidence in the turns. He got in front of me for laps 7 and 8 of 9 and I realized what a mistake I had made. Sitting behind him was so much easier. I attacked on one of the back straights and just dug in. Got him by 10 seconds at the end. Felt good to be able to finish a race without a mechanical for once. Then drank the drinks and lined up for the A race. To my surprise…there were two of us. He was fresh and doesn’t partake in the devil’s tonic, so I conceded pretty early and put on a show for the good patrons of the race.
I spent Friday afternoon re-tubelessing me ss wheels. Cleaned up all the old sealant from the rims, the beads of the tires, added another layer of tape and presto: I lost maybe 2 psi during the race.

We have our state champs that we’re throwing on Saturday. Registration numbers are pretty bleak. I don’t know if it is because it is USAC or if that’s just the way it is with people waiting till the very last minute. Thank goodness we have monetary sponsorship or we would be extremely in the red.

A tale of two remounts

TAL’s is so pretty even the competition looks on admiringly.

…and then there’s my ugly ass remount…

Lol. Those barriers were perfect for me. Exactly the right speed. I ran past people through them on almost every lap. The problem is that they’re short and are meant to be bunny hopped. And I’m not quite there yet. At least not without slamming my rear wheel into them.

Yeah, I can wheel over those, but it’s equally awkward and not faster for me. Bunnyhopping in general makes me nervous as I rely on my feet pretty heavily. Yet another thing to work on.

Dude,
left shoe is off the ground. I haven’t gotten back to that milestone in 2 years–rejoice!
And stop looking at TALs bulge in pic 1.

Dammit y’all

Wow.

i like this because it means when i click on the bulge it gets bigger

I shouldn’t a done that. I’ll never make level 3 now.

lvl3’s don’t look at each other’s bulges!

I was sayin’ like it looked like he was staring in anguish at yours while you did a buttery smooth remount while beating him at CX. But I type “At” instead of “and” and the whole thing went sideways. Fixed it, but the moment of comedy is long past…

edit: and you can just make all this go away now, right?
Mod means modifier, right?
