Cyclocross 2011/12

I’ve always found comfort > weight when it comes to 'cross. Bigger tires are almost always better. Steel bikes are more comfortable, durable and … cool.

do this. anything with any depth at all is preferable to a reflex. box section rims are like mud magnets.

$1040 for the rims alone?

Irony, man. They’re only $525 each.

drummer has a 54cm X Check! Will test-ride that bitch soon.

Aww man, if you get a cross-check, you’ll be like everyone else that has a cross-check. It’s like fucking cross-check central around here. Probably, that’s what you should get. Also, CX bike should be sized a bit smaller according to this book I’m reading. So, that one ought to be perfect.

yeah, i’m planning on sizing down and thinking 54 is parfait. we shall see.

buy that fucking mandaric, quick! never heard of the builder, but that seems like a great deal no matter what.

any reason i shouldn’t get a Fantom Cross?

or the Pro?
http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/fantom_cross_pro_IX.htm

its a motomess

I think basically you are buying a very expensive group by getting one of those

The Pro looks like a lot of bike for the $$$. Ultegra 10sp too.

I never rode with Tiagra, so can’t offer any opinion 'cept spend 200 more for the Pro

Ultegra would def be nice, but I’m really wondering how much bike I need for my first season. I dunno. Hell, maybe even the Sora-level Fantom would be good.

arrrrgh

The first bike I raced was a SS converted hybrid. But…

'cross is addictive. You’ll be wanting more. Don’t wast time and buy all of the bike you can afford and or justify. IMHO…

The Pro is a pretty good deal for $1k. I’m not sure about the cranks, though. I’m not a big fan of the Truvativ outboard bearing cranks and I think I’d want a compact chainring to run the traditional 46/36. They’re offering either a 48/38 which is presumably on a 130mm bcd crank or a 46/36 which is presumably on a 110mm bcd (compact) crank. That’s a big difference. Also, I’d want to replace the handlebars, the brakes, the wheelset, and the tires, but that’s the way I am.

Nashbar has an Aluminum CX frame for $180:

$320 total.

This thread makes me want to look and see if they race cyclocross in Ecuador, even though I know I’ll only be able to afford one bike down there and that it’ll most likely be a MTB.

Actually, I might be able to afford all sorts of bike down there! http://quito.olx.com.ec/bicicleta-de-montana-nueva-de-paquete-iid-22278349#pics

Not really gonna be looking for a DJ bike but if that’s any indication of how the market is there, then hell yes! Finding a cross bike might be difficult though.

I was looking at all those frames the other day, and fuck if I can tell the difference. I think there are four different aluminum CX frames on there that seem nearly identical.

So, I’m designing this bike for cyclocross. I’m wondering if anyone has any specific suggestions for geometry?

TT eff. 555mm
I’m thinking 73/73 HT/ST
61-63mm of trail
425mm chain stay
wheelbase 1020
BB drop ~60mm

Seem reasonable?
