Dammit: Post your bike

But then how do you listen to podcasts and audiobooks so you don’t have to be alone with yourself???

I don’t know about you all but if the ride is less than 4 hours I’d rather it be solo and silent. Longer and I’ll take company.

Party jams on the Bluetooth about 50% of the time I’m on a bike. Usually only city riding or longer solo dithering, but a fast road ride with musical accompaniment can just be sublime sometimes. Also saves me from needing to ring the bell or call out lots of times.

Never anything but the sound of pebbles bouncing off my fenders and the glorious dt star ratchet singing if I’m far enough away from humans to not hear the noise pollution.

Never much appreciated other bluetoothers but have indulged on some long rides for shore.

Drove me crazy on the ski hills til I rode up with Instagrams @skifunk and this dude had a crazy homebuilt system in a bag that just rumbled and I realized he did it for the love/was probably lonely. Now I empathy.

Someone on a one wheel blasting EDM thru a Bluetooth speaker ate shit in front of me today when I was walking, they came full tilt thru a grassy area then onto the MUP but they turned / leaned too aggressively and slid for a bit, they were ok, just shaken up and got back on and one-wheeled into the sunset blaring techno

i can’t speak for mister uncle piton but i know our brains function similarly so ill draw my own conclusions but i have “stimulation seeking behavior” or something, and really require multiple things happening at once for my brain to be at ease, otherwise my ADHD runs absolutely wild. If i dont have another person to talk to while riding I absolutely need some other noise nearby to actively enjoy what im doing, otherwise i fall into thought holes and go all over the place.

often im not even “listening” to whats in my one ear, just having noise is soothing.

the advent of single bluetooh headhones has greatly increased my enjoyment of a thing i loved without them

ohhh, right. i had a roommate like that. he would read with loud music on. i’m like almost the opposite. all of our brains are different huh.

Yeah I never listen to anything when riding/running/hiking. Never even really thought to, to be honest.

i bet i would literally crash if i was listening to something while riding my bike

I train with music on and when I’m at an event I’ll turn it on to make my legs react

I have to have music on to plod away on the trainer otherwise I start to question all of my life choices. Outside activities need me away from as much noise as possible even though my mind sometimes goes to not pleasant places without the distraction. That’s something that’s slowly been getting better after noticing that pattern and being able recognize when it’s happening and let those thoughts go instead of ruminating on them.

honestly at least half of what i like about bicycling is having the time for mental reflection and release. going super fast is rad too though

I get all kinds of thinking done on the bike, earbuds or not. Meditative physical repetition unlocks me.

Trainer is a whooooooole different ball game. I’m planning on getting one this year and will def be using audio visual stimulation on that puppy.

I ride way worse on technical stuff and feel the drag on long rides more when I don’t have a headphone in, I think having something to occupy the top layer of my consciousness helps me let go and get into the flow state better

Don’t hit the nitro too soon!

Personally I could ride all day with nothing but the sweet sounds of the wind. For multi-day rides/tours audiobooks, podcasts and music are a must to keep the brain exercised.

This guy gets it.

I find this fascinating. I’m reading about stimulation seeking behavior. Stimulus seeking is also showing up but that is perhaps slightly different.
I’m also trying to find stuff about the opposite. I actually had to turn off my music to write this post. The older I get, the more sensitive I am becoming. I really can’t think or focus with something else happening.
While in your case, it helps. The human mind is amazing.
