Did you just ShartQ?

Oh you assumed that was a request and not a demand. @Mods back me up on this we want to know.

somewhere between bike #5 and #6 I started thinking about it as cultivating a good parts bin. rideable bikes are the flowers that come from that dirt.

felt like the beginning of an Understanding or something idk

Paging @JUGE_FREDD and @Eric_Estlund I’ve got this berthoud asspain and there’s instruction to never use oil based treatments on it and i have a tub of leather cream that lists beeswax as the first ingredient with seed oils down the list. Also a wee bit of brooks proofide left. Am I totally gonna fuck it up if I use these or yolo?

If this didn’t kill me:

That’ll be fine.

the original Berthoud Saddle Wax I’ve used is very similar to a beeswax version of proofide, and they now sell a cream too

just don’t soak the shit out of it and you’ll be fine

re: Proofide, do you just rub it in on the underside and let it soak in? I’ve never treated a Brooks but maybe I should

I’ve done that, both top and bottom on a brooks and it was fine. I’m just paranoid about the berthoud be cause it’s not a brooks and they say something about only using specially formulated berthoud francais creme pour de leatheur sans huile but I think that’s mostly to keep gormless limeys from soaking the thing in neatsfoot and then writing crotchety emails saying the saddle is not fit for purpose because it split in half on the first ride after molding in a leaky garden shed with their power meter over the winter.

I used WD40 like I assumed I was supposed to and now it’s all droopy!

Can I expect an old Ultegra RD6500 to eat a 32t low gear? I’m not sure if it’s SS or GS cage, pullies are about 50 mm apart, on center.

I’m guessing no, but I’d love to be surprised.

I soaked it in petrol contaminated 10W-30 from my Vauxhall like an old guy on coloured scourchers told me to and now it’s stained me bibs and me mates are calling me shite-trousers!

It’s old 9 speed stuff for a buddy. Is a $10 Tourney that lists 34t capacity a viable path?

:person_shrugging::person_shrugging::person_shrugging:

Should be able to coax it on there

spec back in the day was 27 or 28T, but I’ll bet you could coax it up to a 32T

bigger issue will be chainwrap if you want to run a double. 50mm center-to-center between the pulleys is almost certainly the SS model = 29T of chainwrap capacity. You’ll be eating 21T of that in the cassette, leaving only 8T for the front chainring difference. You can push past that a little bit, but you’re definitely not going to be able to run something like a 46/30 nerdcrank with 16T of difference between the chainrings.

9-speed Deore RD-M592 would be a fantastic choice if a ~$40 or so upgrade is on the table.

It sounds like you’ve got a SS cage. A GS cage is going to be closer to 80 mm c-c.

The SS won’t have enough clearance for the large cog, in my experience.

Soaking in oil causes the fibers to loosen and potentially sag/ fall apart.

You could grab some beeswax and go to town, but yeah, as long as you don’t go overboard most leather treatments are better than dry and cracking.

got this one on two bikes and have been happy with it

in the same vein but more inexpensive is the shadow Alivio one I think? M3100. specs to 36T like the Deore and has a barrel adjuster

i know @EndpointBraden has opinions on which of the cheaper Shimano derailleurs are garbagio and will make you have regerts

All the cheapo shadow derderders have cheapo bushings and wear out fast in my experience. The traditional Alivio one works better.
