It should be snug but it doesn’t need to be stuck on there with the force of gods.
Might depend on the crown race but my Token headsets have a split ring race that is put on and removed easily by hand which makes me think that a loose crown race isn’t something to worry about. Could be wrong though.
Yeah it’s definitely not a big deal
Cool. Got explained at by the dude at Wright Brothers cycles all about headsets. Despite the fact that there’s a diy shop space in the back (thanks Seth for the membership), the dude wouldn’t let me smang my own starnut. He popped it in while telling me that I shouldn’t be able to pull it out and that a loosening headset should have to do with the stem than the starnut.
Did the new starnut go in just fine, though? Also I can always bang a starnut in for you. You know where to find me.
Yep, only time I’ve ever had headset issues like that on one of my bikes was from a cracked crown race.
You in my town?
Nah, in Seattle. Little old shop that has a rad workspace that you can use if you’re a member. Is yours like that too?
Ours is the actual wright brothers bike shop in Dayton. It’s 90% old times bike museum. 9% gift shop. 1% new bikes and community bikes outreach. I thought maybe they changed it up to be useful.
Ours is a place run by this crusty old fuck in a beret named Charles Wright. He’s been around longer than Fremont. I kinda love him. Kinda hate him. This sums up many of my relationships tho.
but one is on the left
it’s a paradox
they’re the right brothers but one HAS to be on the left
unless they stand one ahead of the other, in which case neither of them are on the right, making them STILL not the right brothers
Maybe they hated immigrants and taxes.
They were shitheads for sure. A large reason why they remained single and had no kids.
SQ who has TAF top caps?
I’ve been using the Niner one that came with the fork on my Endpoint, but it’s weird and ugly. I just want something lower profile and fun to look at when I’m climbing.
Idaho represent
Lollin to myself. And crying a little. The extra wide starnut I put in today pulled right out of my steer tube. Not even using much force on the wrench. Not enough holding force to preload the headset.
I dunno know what to do y’all. I think I’ll go with a new headset just to make sure everything is good on that end. But how do I get a starnut to stick? Just to review, I have tried the following:
-Regular 1.125 starnut
-something made for 1.125 steel steer tubes
-1.125 expander wedges
-whatever Josh just gave me that was supposed to be wider.
Someone suggested a 1.25" starnut?
New fork!
Braze in a starnut!
Double nut. Long M6.
Also extra large will work less well than appropriately sized star nut - the edges need to bite into the side. Extra large nut will not expand as well and not grip as well.
Double nut.
Want me to order you an 1.5" star nut?
