king makes some that are lighter. I’ve also wanted to try 3D printing some at my local library but haven’t had the chance to yet
I had the Salsa bags/cages before. They’re really good. They’re also pretty big, wide, plastic-ey, and light. They’re ideal if you want to put any brand of dry bag you have laying around in them because their size supports them and keeps them away from the wheel.
There’s also folks other than Salsa that make matching bag and cage sets like Restrap, Revelate, and Tailfin.
If you already have bags you like, others make metal fork cages that are thinner and have more flexibility with mounting higher or lower on the fork, like Widefoot and Wolftooth.
There’s also Ortlieb mini panniers that attach to fork cages if you’re gonna just be doing easier terrain and not shralping gnar - they pack easier than the dry bag / strap setups and they’re really fast on and off the bike.
I personally use Tailfin cages because they’re so compact, and Revelate bags because they’re decently-sized and a bit narrower profile from the front compared to Salsa.

This is a pretty definitive list
I got these because I couldn’t believe the price everything else was:
Do people have favorites for “tube/tool pouch underneath normal waterbottle” cage solutions that go in a traditional front triangle location?
How about the wolf tooth B-Rad thing? Lifts the bottle up a little, but it gives lots of options.
I’m not seeing any Tern dealers closer than Madrid, which is too far to go for a test ride… there is a R&M dealer in town (that doesn’t have the Carrie to test) at least
Bummer. If you’re feeling adventurous, Upway has a Spanish site that I think is a newish thing for them.
yep, I’m creeping on it ![]()
Have you done a test ride and tried to get the front wheel up in the air? Are you going to unload the box every time? Seems like a lot.
definitely a gamble on multiple levels— it’s the smallest front box bike I can find, unloading won’t be as much of a hassle because the cargo is typically kiddo, market groceries in a tote, or a dog. but for those reasons a typical front and rear rack combo wouldn’t be as ideal, eg I can’t imagine my border collie being mellow strapped to a rack and she’s too big for panniers
I’m not sure how you get leverage to get the front end in the air
Are you accounting for width of all the bike parts in that equation?
I did that same process in my elevator and it turned out the handlebars made it a frustrating tetris game to get into the elevator at the same time
Is that something your wife might have to do if she wants to use the bike alone? Is a smaller cargo bike with a dog trailer an option?
yes, at least temporarily; this isn’t our permanent flat but we’re here until October at least. trouble is even a regular bike or trailer would also need to be wedged in because there’s no secure bike room that I’m aware of, so anything larger than a folding bike will require shenanigans
There has got to be another way. Do you have an underground garage nearby? Do they have bike parking? Where are you staying? I have a few bike friends in Barcelona from years back. Maybe they can offer advice depending on neighborhood.
