Didn’t you singlespeed in that last event of yours?
yeah I rode singlespeed for stagecoach and the dark divide this summer. I mean, I do work for a tech company, but I’m at the bottom of the pay scale doing customer support.
SS allows me to not beat you and still feel smug about it
The problem with a “minimalist rear rack” is they all weigh as much as a Tubus Fly
I can schlep two panniers of groceries on my fly mounted with the qr kit and it doesn’t feel flexy
Also it looks like a real rack and not one of those weird T shaped hipster jawns
checking in
Do you know Justin B.?
We ride with him sometimes.. cool dude, goes fast uphill.
I don’t! but I like his bike
He does tattoos if you ever need some black work done while chatting about steel singlespeeds
In defense of the Tumbleweed T-rack, the platforms are much wider so they’re optimized for strapping a drybag + sleeping pad to the top. Tubus racks are really narrow on the top except for the monster ones like the Cargo Evo, since they optimize for panniers.
I’m considering an Ortlieb quick rack, so I can save some weight on the Vaya and still be able to quickly pop some panniers on for an errand to, say, haul stuff to recycling. The ‘L’ version is basically a sensibly-priced Tailfin now that they have the axle mounting.
I really hate the aesthetics of most of bikepacking
I’ve built a couple T-racks variants, they’re really about running cages on the vertical struts as needed, with a dry bag on top as snowman says
But if you really want to load them you can click on a pannier.
yeah the more i look at these things, the more i like the tumbleweed t-rack. though i also think the pannier rack might be more versatile.
technically the tumbleweed t rack is not rated for panniers, though i have been using some of the revelate nano panniers on mine and haven’t had issues as long as i keep the weight reasonable.
yeah i don’t own panniers, but i’m kinda learning towards the pannier rack instead of the t-rack just in case though as my brain is always like “but what if you change your mind and get panniers?” and they both have the threaded bosses which is a big seller for me in terms of versatility.
I also think a lot of bikepacking is brutally over-dithered, so I’d also consider The Simplest Thing That Works, which is a $30 Sunlite generic rack, and run the struts to a Salsa Post-Lock
Dare I say “Sir, this is tarck” ?
I have rack mounts at the dropouts and the seatstays so I don’t need a seat clamp mount.
I am not much for dithering most of the time, but I do enjoy a quality purpose built bicycle product and the tumbleweed thing checks a lot of boxes and could be used on multiple bikes we own (between myself and my partner).
Also maybe i’m just a snob and don’t want to buy some ugly generic looking rack. I dunno. I just can’t picture not hating it on my bike.
You can have this for free if you’d like (Topeak tetra rack).
It’s just that often the path from the rack to the bosses on a compact frame is ridiculously long and taking a straight horizontal-ish path to a Post Lock is sturdier.
