I’m going down the cargo bike dither hole and trying to figure out the pannier situation for a longtail (Cannondale Cargowagen). We’ve been using my good old ortlieb panniers and they work great because they are great, but they don’t exactly make full use of the capabilities of that bike.
Cannondale makes a perfect fitting pannier “system” because of course they do, but it’s really expensive. I’m ok with the price if they’re actually a great option, but they look like a fucking pain to get on and off the rack, especially compared with the ortliebs.
Are there relatively standard long panniers that would fit on that rack?
Also looking at bigass baskets that could go on top of the rack and then we could just drop bags in there, but I think I do want to have both as options.
Also looking at getting some ortlieb front roller classics, since I think that would let us use four panniers on the back, but that’s very silly and also doesn’t solve for large, long items.
Looked into Arkel? Their commuter line has some massive shopping panniers, and an expandable straps-and-bucket ‘haul stuff’ panniers that might do the trick. Their attachment points look stronger than Ortlieb too, but I haven’t had a chance to see first-hand.
Check out the Tern cargo hold panniers, available in multiple sizes. Their mounting points up top are fixed, so whether or not they’ll work might depend on the rack. I have a set of the 37s and can get you some measurements of those upper mounting points if you want. They’re not quick release but not horrible to remove if that makes any difference to you.
I’m not 100% on my memory here, I either used P-clamps on the brake bridge, or possibly had both struts converge to the same hole bolted to the bridge direct.
Whatever it was, worked fine for full bucket panniers.
with ebay, you offer absurdly low and get the “immediate rejection of bid” notification, then you just keep doing that in $20 increments until youve reached their secret reserve.
also mrs pears has a sick caserole that we bought in 2010 from a deaf gentleman in DC and i think he was one of the rawland fellas or at least good friends with them? nice guy, bought a chrome bag from him too i still have.
i’ll post pics of the wifesalsa soon, it was the baby blue color but we had it powdercoated the same color as the color of the one above, because we like to confuse people.
