Is the Park grease less costly than the Shimano grease? That’s all I’ve ever used.

The Park stuff is rebranded marine grade grease, but in a smaller quantity.

Shimano has like 5 types of grease at least, so it’s a little generalized to say “shimano grease” is the motorex stuff.

the motorex stuff does look to be the same as the general shimano grease they glob on things like crankset splines. just like a slight neon yellow/green hue to it. there’s always a lot of that on new bikes assembled with shimano parts. but which shimano grease is this?

there’s special grease (for freehub bodies), premium grease (doesn’t say what it’s for, just says it’s for dura-ace level components), dura-ace grease (is this the same as premium grease?), roller hub grease, shift cable grease (also says special grease but in a black tub), IGH grease which is the same as the derailleur clutch grease.

Internet is 99% sure that Shimano is rebranded Motorex, which itself may be rebranded

Park polylube is proprietary blend

I misread this as, “prolly lube”.

hot take i don’t think the kind of grease really matters.

the kind does matter for the application.

some specific uses like freehubs do need a lighter grease.

is it for the bearings inside the freehub though? what about pawls vs star ratchet? do they all use the same lighter grease?

I’ve just used the park green stuff and NFS, depending on which ones I find/have around

rollie parts and threads get grease, just about everything else gets oil unless manufacturer tells me otherwise

well, shimano has the same grease for IGH hubs and for clutches.

they have a different grease for hub bearings - and a different one for freehubs.

dt swiss makes their own “special grease” for star ratchets. it’s def thicker than the shimano grease for IGH. but maybe not as thick as your park tools general purpose grease.

I wish it was just listed with weights like oils are.

I Phil Wood grease anything and everything.

I’ll keep using the special white grease that S&S provided for my couplers, they seem like smart people

In my experience, for “assembly grease,” just about anything in a tub is fine.

Shimano USA now distributes Motorex, and the rep said the Motorex grease is indeed the general-use Shimano grease. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

We’ve been using that for assembly grease for over a year now, and I like it.

For freehubs (except DT) we use Dumonde Tech grease or oil (or a blend FANCY!).

DT grease for DT ratchets.

Phil Wood for repacking bearings because tradition.

For pressing bearings into hubs, I have a giant tub of some low viscosity stuff from Rock N Roll that seems to work well.

Last but not least, I recently started using Dumode Tech liquid grease for things like cable fixing bolts/washers because it wicks in almost as well as Tri-Flow but seems to stay in place better.

Thanks for coming to my Ted grease talk.
