Did you just ShartQ?

It’s like there’s a lot of incentive to make things that work without worrying about retro compatibility on parts that are at least partly consumables.

My intention was to try and keep this dangler since I believe it was the last classy silver dangler that Shimano made before going full boxy with their modern stuff. On most bikes I think the modern stuff looks okay but this particular build I wanted to try to maintain the shiny silver feel as much as possible.

Instead I think I will try and find some ST-5700 in silver and just keep everything 10-sp

buy some extra shift cables for when those integrated brake lever shifters begin to imbibe them as well

Hi, welcome to Tarck, we call them shakes here

FWIW I think 5700 is pretty much the lowest of the low point for modern Shimano shifting. It can be improved greatly with high-end cables, like the Shimano Optislick (which are available in kits with bunch of Squirrel-friendly colors) or the Jagwire Polished stainless cables, but it still sucks.

Shimano 5800 was available in silver, I’m sure you could track that stuff down. It was orders of magnitude better than anything from the 7900/6700/5700 era.

Unfortunately it is 11-sp

Yes, because you were just asking about 11s.

Oh nice, that looks good.

Could you sand / emery / polish the dark finish off some 5800 / 6800? I swear I’ve seen projects that do classic shiny chromey style with modern parts

I think the sticking point isn’t so much silver parts as the boxy nature of modern 11-sp danglers and functionally inferior 10-sp shakes.

Given this is the best silver 11-sp dangler option I’m reluctant to upgrade everything.

For sundeal with Altus dangler Y/N?
(the 8spd 11-40 one)

Flippantly: if it’s shiny enough nobody can tell what shape it is.

Seriously: I just accepted that shimano works good but looks bad. The older the frame the worse it looks.

Until it comes out the other side and is an 80s Supra with modern everything added.

5700 was OK. I used it for 3 years and had no problems

I’ve found on the low-end of the Shimano spectrum, their max tooth count is pretty accurate. I’ve got the B-screw for the Tiagra on my kiddo’s bike maxed out to shift a 34T, which is the max per the techdoc.

If you’re gonna try to shift a 40T, you might need to Goatlink.

Unless I read the description wrong, the cassette comes with one.

I’d do it.
