Did you just ShartQ?

don’t hotdogs come cooked?

srsly tho- if ball park plump when you cook them, just jam a few in there and hit it with a heat gun until it won’t budge

I had a similar issue. Tried several star nuts, even the oversized ones for steel forks and expander wedges. I ended up getting a new headset with cartridge bearings and fixed it (with the standard star but that came with the headset). I think I had a borked headset and it wouldn’t adjust properly regardless of the preload.

I would get it tight and do 2 hops landing nose heavy and it started to move again.

Should’ve said this sooner, it’s a 15 y.o. aluminum race frame. Last time I ride it was spending an hour plus coming up short on jumps.

yea, your head tube has different geometry.

Your stem is too loose Star nut is only for pre load. Carbon paste the stem and steerer interface. Torque it high. The star nut and compression cap should not be holding your shit together.

Is there a reliable source for old silver 8 speed era chainrings? Or just pick through whats available on ebay?

Sugino if you don’t care about ramps and pins

Edit: Universal Cycles and I think Ben’s Cycle has a good selection in common BCD options.

Are any of the folding locks worth spending money on? Not looking for anything to stand up to being locked up over night or in weird areas, just enough to keep an expensive bike safe while I’m grocery shopping. Weight is not a concern at this point. The bike will also have an Abus frame lock on the rear wheel.

yes, the Abus folding locks are extremely convenient and good

just don’t get the “lite” versions where the links are actually loops of tiny cable embedded in plastic

Their Bordo Granit XPlus 6500 has hardened steel plates and the option to get it keyed to match my frame lock, so that’s tempting, except for the price.

Oh, and the 6-8 week lead time for a keyed alike special order.

the combo version is surprisingly cool, not having to fumble at lockup time

they also make some keyed locks that will close without using the key, but that gets real obnoxious if your friend forgot them at home and buddylocked you and you’re on mushrooms at a townie bar where some retirees just started playing beatles covers in a sunken place

luckily a tiny man with tiny boltcutters was able to get that Abus mini chain open, and I realized we had been on our mutual friend’s boat together leaving the same town like 6-7 years previously

I’ve been very pleased with my combo Bordo. Easy to pack/mount, don’t have to remember keys.

I’ll look at those. I wasn’t considering the combo locks after my Otto lock auto changed the combo on me and I couldn’t get it open. Turns out that’s a common enough problem to be on their FAQ page.

Okay this may be an extreme ShartQ but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything:

My Pugsley takes a 100mm bottom bracket. I currently use the Surly crankset with the 24mm spindle. I have a Race Face “100mm” bottom bracket with the external bearings. It doesn’t look like anybody but Surly sells a 100mm external bearing bb for a 24mm spindle so it’s way overpriced.

Which comes around to… The only difference between a 68/73mm and a 100mm bb in this case is the length of the tube between the cups, right? Like any old external bb for a 24mm spindle will work as long as I swap the tube? And the tube is probably not super necessary anyway?

This feels like a very dumb and obvious question but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything extra dumb since I’m talking Surly and fat bikes.

i got the bordo centium before the price inexplicably went up about $40 at cost. i love the thing- mega convenient as you can lock up to damned near anything.

the shop i used to work at saw a few reg (step above light) bordos come through absolutely pretzeled but the owner still had their bikes.

i dont usually lock up for extended periods in high security areas but when i do i don’t sweat it.

The drive side bearings on the RF cranks that I have are 22 mm I.D. I guess there are 24 mm variants out there.

The Surly BB is UST a crappy Andle one. Race Face or Shimano will work. You may even be able to reuse the tube in the middle to keep dust and other crap out of there if you’re lucky.

You may have to fuck around with some spacers to adjust for how much cup extends out of the frame, but beyond that it’s compatible.
