my flawed memory is that there was a lot of fervour around racing and frame lightness at the time, and by going OS they could make tubing stiffer and lighter at the same time. especially tube sets like Max that were directionally optimised

I donāt have all the answers but my understanding is that ISO tests have become more stringent over time and in particular the front end impact tests have influenced what manufacturers are able to offer. This is part of the reason tapered steerers and integrated races have become so ubiquitous on carbon forks. Those features reduce stresses at the crown to make it easier and cheaper to make a lightweight fork that will pass the tests.
For steel bikes I think part of it is manufacturing and cost. The market for fancy steel frames isnāt there. Making production frames overseas with thin, fancy tubes is just asking for failures. A light steel frame is also going to buckle pretty easily in a front end impact test.
Iām not a metallurgist but I also think that the high zoot steels with increased yield strength that are potentially more resistant to impacts are also more sensitive to fatigue.
Iām not sure I agree with magnitude of the testing loads, and it misses the typical JRA fatigue failures at the head tube/DT and seat cluster.

I had a CAD3 for a while and well, thatās what I think of when I think of Cannondale. It was an amazing (ā¦ly stiff) bike. Punishing, really.

My dad had a 1994 Killer-V 900 with AMP fork that I HATED riding as a kid. Eventually I got a freeride bike and so life goes. Years later, after mountain bikes are gone and I am poor, I put vbrakes, short stem, Manitou Mars and wide bars on it. Great memories of the absolute weapon it became.
Their early 90s OS tube frames were sweet too, got one for my partners first Canadian commuter.
They seem to have done more proprietary and wacky stuff than lots of others, I respect them trying.
Yeah werenāt they one of the first to do disc brakes on mtb with their weird 4 bolt coda stuff too? The old jeckyl was pretty cool xc carbon with no pivots and a shock. Saw so many exploded chain stays though. One customer warrantied 3 frames in a year. Neat idea though.
I had a scalpel 26 carbon the final year they made it. It was a great bike for that moment in time.
They were one of the first to make decent production 29ers too. Had a single speed and geared one. Both great for the time.
Caad9/10 were incredible bike racerās bikes.
SuperX hi-mod still probably the best dedicated CX race bike (rim brake) ever made.
BadBoy Headshock was a killer hybrid that only suffered from crappy hybrid spec.
Synapse HiMod and EVO HiMod also both perfect bikes in their moment.

Yeah they raced the Scalpel on the world cup circuit in the Volvo Cannondale days. I wondered how they held up with that flex stay. Mind you, it only had about an inch travel by the look.

Actually ISO pedal fatigue is where you see a lot of production steel frames fail. While I have never tested an English, the pencil-thin stays and hit-or-miss braze quality isnāt confidence inspiring. Still probably better than the host of completely smashed chainstays a lot of builders are using. Saw these on No. 44 bikes gram a while back: 
I certainly wouldnāt smash a chainstay that much, I agree that itās asking for trouble.
Part of Englishās schtick is that production frames are overbuilt since they need to be made for anyone to ride. Iād agree with that.
