but also, where’s my 650b njs style frameset with flat mount disc brake capabilities?
But this is the absolute classic definition of a good think tank. Come up with 1000 bad ideas for one amazing one (like torque bolts, for example). Where else could Igor get a free panel of bike nerds?
Are we his unpaid interns working for exposure?
It’s good for your internet resume! I’ll write you a good recommendation. It may have obscure, sometimes inappropriate references, but good nonetheless.
I’m going to put non elected god admin of an obscure fixed gear bike forum on my resume from now on.
"The __________ Company has been traveling the world for over 30 years in search of the unique, the unusual, and hopefully, a few things that help make our lives a bit less ordinary.
How did we do it? By breaking all the rules. Our “Owner’s Manual” catalogue only featured one item per page, we used paintings of items versus photography, and each item was accompanied by intensive romantic copy. These were all things the “experts” said we couldn’t do.
Since we started, our philosophy has been to help people “live their lives the way they wish they were” by offering distinctive, hard-to-find lifestyle merchandise for men and women inspired by our travels.
The ______ Owner’s Manual, still showcasing content in superb artistic renderings accompanied by sophisticated narrative prose, was, and is, a one-of-a-kind experience, and something we’ve tried to recreate on our website. For those of you who only know us digitally, let us send you a catalogue. You won’t be disappointed.
The __________ Company represents an aspirational lifestyle. Our selections enable our customers to feel transported to a world full of travel, adventure, and romance; a world where the uncommon journey creates the memories we cherish most. The company’s history is rooted in this aspiration and we try to live up to it every single day.
I’ve always said that we took the road less traveled.
I have a feeling that’s exactly why you and I found each other."
The J. Peterman copy works well if you just add Velo Orange into the blanks
I am making a donation in your name to the human fund
oh shit
the round-bladed fork aesthetic would work
torque indicating bolts explained (or something) right here
arduino versus evil
if we’re going to be dorks about it.
absolutely correct.
though if you know the base material/nut material and the bolt material as well as the k factor/nut factor you can arrive at a rough estimate of torque applied. if we’re going to be dorks about it the long way around. which is generally what we do here
do you want to swap bolting calculation spreadsheets?
i don’t have any, but you want me to tell you about the time a factory “fixed” loosening bolts on a 2 bolt chainstay mounted kickstand that threads directly into the frame by adding liquid threadlocker to a 30mm m6 18-8 fastener with about 24 engaged threads and didnt change the torque settings from what they previously used for dry assembly on like 1500 bikes? (more bikes really, but only 1500 between 2 cities that i care about)
We do a lot of aerospace assemblies at work that have these special bolts where the head is designed to shear off at the proper torque. Obviously they’re not meant to be taken apart but they’re pretty cool to work with.
Did this technology trickledown to toilet lid installation or the other way around?
I worked on a project where the structural engineer had designed a connection that intended to use something like 16 DYWIDAG rods, typically intended for deep drilled anchorage into hillsides, to develop the required friction to keep it out of a shear mode as the faying surfaces were not keyed in any way. Trouble is, DYWIDAGs are designed to be stretched during installation with a large machine, a coarsely threaded collar screwed on, then released. There’s too much axial motion and the threads are too coarse to reliably generate tension by tightening bolts. We tried a bunch of different assembly conditions with a Skidmore until we found one that got us close enough for approval and so far the building hasn’t failed
my dream bike
Ahem
I believe this is MY dream bike
Add Low trail fork
take my hand, we can live together in the same dream, riding 650b NJS bikes side by side
Dithering DQ: I’ve been using Speedplay Frogs for ages for commuting/touring since the restoring force of SPD-like pedals has bugged my left knee in the past. I’m contemplating trying Time ATACs, since they’re the other free-float pedal.
- Is it worth trying ATACs?
- There are a zillion models. Are there significant differences other than weight/price?
