Did you just ShartQ?

I’m missing three bushings on the chain. They’re all cupped pretty good. The drivetrain was heavily worn when I got it, and I’ve put another 6kmiles on it. So like, easily 8-12k on it.

It isn’t skipping, it shifts great… the only problem is I feel like maybe I’m taking this one too far.

It’s shimano tourney 8speed
I’d be happy if you told me to ride it til it breaks.

wwyd

chains breaking is not a particularly fun failure for you or the food you’re portaging

If I replace the chain, will I not have to replace the cassette and perhaps chainrings and dangle cogs?

Embarrassing disclosure: I’m realizing tonight that I have never kept a bike long enough to need to replace the drivetrain and so I have never had to think about this.

Bro it’s time to invest in some bombproof 8sp shit

Luckily for you, we’re talking about $75 in total parts cost for all of it.

But yeah… it’s time.

lol okay so… the bottom bracket is also fried. Should I just replace everything except the dangle, pusher and cranks?

@LASER_BEIGE bombproof 8speed recs?

Probably cheaper to replace the cranks than a chainring.

Probably.

Is it a replaceable ring to begin with?

Yeah it’s all serviceable, nothing stamped

Well that’s good at least.

What kind of cassette range are you looking for?

I have a wipperman connex 8sp chain in my box for just in case I decide I want to use this 7410 group I have

It’s an uninspired triple. Probably has all the range of a modern 1x12 with all the weight and redundancy

It’s a bandaid bike that I thought I would have replaced by now with a Dr. Dew but decided I love the wacky geo… I would prefer to spend nothing on it.

I prob could even just throw a new chain on it and let it skip until it doesn’t lol, right?

I’ll go to the nonprofit before I leave DC

Why not spend $150 on a deore 12 dangler, shifter, chain and cassette?

Hybrid triple (or double) is probably better for this application. All the Altus bits (including a Shimano bb) are less than $100.

If you have an address I can post it to I’ve got everything in stock.

Thank you Braden! Okay I will definitely dm you about that when I have clearer logistics. I think it’ll be Philly.

when are you arriving in philly?

Not sure yet! I’m getting ahead financially while it’s good and I have my needs met here. I haven’t found a place to store the truck is the only logistic.

Don’t buy Shimano stuff off eBay that direct ships from China :colbert:

FFS especially don’t buy chains
